CRISIS AT CABLE: CNN LOSES HALF OF AUDIENCE FROM YEAR AGO

CNN has lost more than half its audience from a year ago, according to NIELSEN!

In 24-Hour Time Period for the first quarter of 2004, FOX NEWS CHANNEL averaged 824,000 viewers, down 36% vs. a year ago, which saw heightened viewership due to the Iraqi War. CNN plummeted 52%, averaging 458,000 viewers, while MSNBC dropped 49% averaging 234,000 viewers.

In PrimeTime, FOX NEWS decreased 36% from its 2003 viewership, averaging 1,394,000 people. CNN plunged 48% with 806,000 viewers and MSNBC fell 50% with 333,000 viewers.

Eleven out of the top 12 cable news shows so far in 2004 appeared on FOX NEWS. Only one of CNN’s shows, Larry King Live, made the list at number four with 1,302,000 viewers. King trailed behind FNC’s The O’Reilly Factor (2,241,000 viewers), Hannity & Colmes (1,540,000 viewers).

To a point, yes. However a 50% decline in viewership must have something to do with their being murderous liars.

wouldnt that have something to do with the fact that there was a war going on a year ago? I cant imagine you could match ratings for a televised war.

Who remembers when TV news was power for the ugly? When reporters actually had to work their way to the White House beat. That took years of dedication to the craft & knowledge of government & how it works. Today, it a cookie cutter cut-out of some tanned young babe or stud who not only hasn't been around enough to understand, they haven't been around enough to get dry behind the ears.

Even when you disagreed with Huntley/Brinkley or Cronkite, you had to somewjat respect 'em.

PAPER: PEARL WIDOW FINDS CNN LOVE

Eason Jordan, a CNN news exec who was deeply involved in the network's coverage of the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl, is now romantically involved with Pearl's widow, Mariane, the WASHINGTON POST is planning to report on Wednesday, sources tell DRUDGE.

Colleagues said they don't know how long Jordan and Pearl have been an item, columnist Richard Leiby is planning to report.

MORE

Some CNNers mulled the ethical implications of the relationship. Pearl, who earlier this month was turned down for compensation from the 9/11 victims' fund and is appealing, appeared on CNN Tuesday with her attorney. "While she's a source, what kind of source is she?" one staffer wondered. "She's a source about her husband's death."

A 22-year veteran of CNN, Jordan made his name overseeing the network's war coverage and expanding its international bureaus. He serves as CNN's executive vice president and chief news executive and chairs its editorial board.

When Jordan faced controversy last year after disclosing that he had not reported some things he had learned during 13 trips to Iraq for "fear of endangering our staff in Baghdad," Pearl publicly defended him, Leiby will note.

"I have known Jordan for almost a year, since the death of my husband," she wrote in a letter published in The Washington Post on April 19. "From the start, I was surprised by how ethical Jordan is and how dedicated he is to issues of journalistic ethics _ more concerned than I would have expected from someone at a network like CNN, with its splashy logos and special theme music for the war. In every conversation that we've had, Jordan's concern for the safety of his journalists, journalists in general and the people helping them in the field has been clear."

Developing...

Talking widows into applying for money not intended them is now a journalistic ethic. Interesting.

Gonz's point is that the decline in Fox's viewership is significantly less than the decline in CNN's and MSNBC's viewership. That means the gap is widening between Fox and its competitiors.

As for the journalism ethics angle, I'll withhold specific judgment until we know how long Jordan and Pearl have been dating. It's perfectly OK for a reporter to start dating a source. But once that starts, the source has to stop being a source. To do otherwise is about as big of an ethical faux pas as there is. It ranks in my top three:

1. Pulling a Janet Cooke (completely making up a story)
2. Pulling a Jayeson Blair (plagiarizing stories)
3. Pulling an Eason Jordan (using your fuck buddy as a source)

Not this time. My point was CNN viewership is going down the crapper. FoxNews is, like all other 24 hour news channels, regurgitating & overemphasizing the same mundane crap as the other infotainment chanels with a different spin. Give me the web for news (well, newspaper sites) & TV for immediacy.
