Police say a man sought in connection with a fatal shooting Tuesday in Puna died in a car crash on -the other side of the island later in the day.
...Police believe the man who may have fired the fatal shot was involved in a one-car crash in North Kohala around 1:30 p.m.
...Acting Police Lt. Richard Sherlock said police were not in pursuit of the suspect when he crashed, and that authorities were unaware he was in Kohala.
...The crash involving the suspect happened about three hours after the shooting. Police said the man was driving north on the Akoni Pule Highway near the 7-mile marker in a 2007 Dodge pickup when the truck crossed the centerline, hit an embankment and overturned. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck. Fire personnel took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 2:48 p.m. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
