Kobe insists he's innocent of rape Associated Press Kobe Bryant was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in a case bound to tarnish the career of one of the NBA's brightest young superstars.
BRYANT DENIED THE CHARGE, fighting back tears at a news conference in Los Angeles and saying he was guilty only of adultery. "I didn't force her to do anything against her will. I'm innocent," he said, sitting next to his wife, Vanessa. "I sit here in front of you guys furious at myself, disgusted at myself for making a mistake of adultery." The 24-year-old Los Angeles Lakers' guard faces four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation if convicted of the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said. Hurlbert said Bryant forced the victim into "submission" through physical force but refused to disclose other details. The woman worked the front desk at the exclusive spa where Bryant was staying while in the state for knee surgery. Hurlbert said she would not be made available for comment. Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, said he will plead innocent. Speaking at Bryant's news conference at the Lakers' arena, Mackey said the defense will be that the sexual encounter was "between two consenting adults."

*sigh*

Call me naive but I really bought into his 'squeaky clean' image. I've only recently become interested in basketball in the past few years and have followed the Lakers and Kobe with a special interest since then. So many interviews everyone talked about him saying he didn't create a rapport with his teammates in the beginning because he wouldn't go out to clubs and bars with them. While a problem then, I liked the idea that he was removed from that.

Now this, and he's admitting he cheated on his wife and I'm dissapointed. Is there any celebrity today that really is living an honest and decent life? The only other basketball player that has gotten as much good press as Kobe has is David Robinson.

And these women are so supportive of their husbands after they cheat on them. His wife was holding his hand throughout the whole press conference and stroking his hand... I doubt I would be that supportive if I was cheated on.

To the first question, yes, there are quite a few. They don't get the press coverage though. An example is Howie Long formerly of the Raiders. He & his first & only wife have 2 or 3 kids. They take seperate flights when they travel, in case one of them is killed in a mishap so the other is around to care for the family. He actually graduated college before joining pro sports So, it can happen.

As for your second...I agree it would be hard to put on a happy face with an adulterer. That's where the big bucks come in I suppose.

i am sure they are advised to do that. it looks better at the divorce proceedings when they are looking for ungodly sums of money for alimony and/or child support.

i'm sure most celebrity types start off leading a good life. however, constantly being put on a pedastal by fans, earning insane amounts of money and being surrounded by yes-men i can almost see why they would start doing things like that. kind of like a god syndrome. "they cant touch me, i'm so-and-so"

back when Marvin Hagler was still the boxing champ, he stopped in at a local nightclub. he didn't pay the cover, the manager and staff all got autographs and he sat at the bar where the patrons were tripping over themselves to buy him a drink. it was the most pathetic thing i had seen up to then. if you can generate that type of response just about everywhere you go, you'll probably start thinking all the rules dont apply to you.

Mr. Squeeky Clean

Maybe I'm a little cynical, but I didn't believe the contrived press conference. His demeanor seemed a little too phoney; his sniffles reminded me of Lizzie Grubman's crocodile tears after she was sentenced for plowing her SUV into a group of people outside a Hamptons nightclub a couple years ago. I thought any moment his wife of only 2 years would rip his arm off and start wacking him with it; even though she seemed supportive she looked like she was pissed; I'll bet Kobe's sleeping on the couch. Yes Kobe, infidelity is grounds for divorce--I wonder if his wife signed a prenuptual agreement? And what's with his new look? Hairless and innocent as a baby? I believe the woman at the center of this reported the assult to the police shortly after it happened; it can only add to her credibility: someone who was just angry at being used and cried rape in hopes to collect some cash later would try a little extortion first. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this situation--from how tarnished Kobe's image could get, will he loose his shoe contract with Nike (which he signed a couple weeks before his arrest) to just how long will his wife support his actions? I hope the media gives it some unbiased coverage....

He and his wife supposedly did not sign a prenup and his parents weren't talking to him for a long time because he didn't go to college and because of the prenup thing. Once their grandchild was born, they started talking again. Looks like Kobe's gonna figure out that that prenup was a pretty damn good idea now.

Just like I don't want to jump to conclusions that he's innocent, I don't know that she is either. It's possible she had it in her mind to extort this from the get-go, you never know. It's also possible she is a victim too. We'll never know. They'll settle out of court and try to make it go away.

Jeeze, no prenup. Must've thought he was going the "'til death do we part" route :banghead: It's so strange nowdays how celebrity transgressions are easily forgotton: They go thru the media or the courts or whip out the checkbook and it's like nothing happened. I'm thinking of the teflon sleeze himself Slick Willie, but I also cringe whenever I hear that backbiter sportscaster Marv Albert calling a game and saying "Yesss!" :eek10:

She probably only married him for the money anyway. What would she care if he cheated, as long as she has the money...

Damn, I didn't even notice the nature of the ad....thought it was some weight loss pill......which, of course, woulda made it much more legit

Are they ABSOLUTELY sure it's her? If not, then this guy might find himself in some really deep shit.

When is enough enough?

All weekend, when I had a couple of seconds, I'd check the news & literallly all I saw was Kobe crap. All day today on the radio the theme was Kill Kobe or (the girl) is a slut.

From what I heard today I conclude that wimins are helpless victims & need protection from we domineering rapists. It can also be concluded that Kobe Bryant is the best basketball player in teh history of mankind & he is also next in line to be the fucking Pope.

Until there is evidence to the contrary, Kobe is assumed innocent & there is NO STORY.

Only sometimes.

Our pop culture has decended into a valueless void where heroes must be taken down & villians must be rendered heroic.

Really though, it could go either way, we just don't know. I guess if you expect the least from both of them, we won't be surprised. There are no heroes anymore. Only a handful of people who do slightly more than the average joe and are martyred for it.

Personally, I don't care wether he's guilty or not. I think the admission of adultery deserves a few years in the pokey. As for his wife, well, there are several million reasons for her to be supportive, aren't there.

Criminal court: He will either be acquitted or plea-bargain this to a misdemeanor and pay a hefty fine, possibly some probation. No way he does time.

Civil court: The woman gets $$$, one way or another, either through a judgement or an out of court settlement.
