SUBWAY ARSON ATTACK
More than 230 people are feared to have been killed in an arson attack on an underground train in South Korea.
Witnesses said a man set fire to a milk carton containing a flammable liquid and threw it into a packed train carriage at an underground station in the country's third largest city, Taegu.
A second train pulled into the station as the blaze took hold. Up to 400 people were on board the two rush-hour trains.
Black smoke billowed from the station entrance as rescuers battled to save lives.
Many passengers were trapped behind closed doors as they tried to escape.
One man received a desperate call from his wife on her mobile phone.
"Help me," he quoted her as saying. "There's a fire on the subway. The door is locked,
Fire officials said 134 were confirmed dead, 136 were injured and 99 people were missing.
One said: "If you ignite a flammable liquid like petrol inside a closed space, you'll get something very close to an explosion.
"There would have been hardly any time to escape."
Fire chief Kim Shin-dong said: "More than 70 unidentified bodies are inside the carriages. The bodies have been burned beyond recognition. It's going to take some time to identify the bodies though DNA testing."
A 56-year-old male with a history of mental illness was arrested on suspicion of starting the blaze.
