How it Came About; What it Means

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Workers, enjoy your 3 day wekend.

I will. I will not enjoy, however, the shrunken pay check.

I disagree with the quote about other holidays. I can't speak for holidays in other countries, but the American holidays I can think of are mostly related to birthdays, religion, or are created for profit by greeting card companies. To be sure, most of second two types of holidays may have other, deeper roots.

No 3 day weekend, I work straight through... However do get double time for the actual holiday so I suppose that comforts a little...Except for the whole sitting here starving thing while others are at a BBQ :crying4:

I'm surprised Gonz hasn't noticed that it's a communist holiday. It glorifies the workers and thumbs it's nose at the bosses. ;)

Long weekends mean so much more to me now that there's no end of work in sight :D

spent the day fishing with the boys, didnt catch much fish but thats ok....
