Southern Discomfort
Disenfranchisement!

An Ohio poll worker was fired for mentioning that his immigrant parents learned English and that maybe citizens voting in English-speaking America should speak the language of their country, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Cuyahoga County volunteer Martin Drabek was fired by the board of elections after two Hispanics who overheard his comments formally complained.

Drabek said that during the part of the training that deals with language barriers, he did mention that his parents were from Poland and had learned English. He said he mentioned that he doesn't believe voting ballots should be in any other language than English.

"We can't tolerate that," said Jane Platten, an elections board administrator on Drabek's removal.

OK, the thread title is supposed to be the Spanish translation of "You're fired". It loses something in the translation...

I believe the word is Desempleado...;) While I agree with the fact that all forms dealing with the government should be written in English, I will add this caveat...If a person wants to gain US citizenship, one of the prerequisites should be ESL classes. I believe that we are the only country on this planet that doesn't have an 'official' language, and it's high time we started pushing for it.

If they couldn't speak english, how did they know what he was saying?

Oh, they understood english. They just didn't like anyone else being entitled to an opinion that might oppress someone.

But (you gotta explain this to me) how do you fire someone, who's not being paid?

if they were a volunteer then they could still be fired. While I think we should have English as the predominant language, I do feel people should be allowed to speak their own. But keep in mind English is and should be the predominant language. The guy should not have been fired.

I can smell lawsuit on this one, but what's he going to sue for? He wasn't being paid...

Infringement of free speech rights and the accompanying emotional trauma.

BTW, it's easy to fire a volunteer. You simply walk up and say "Get the fuck outta here!"

Basic English lanuguage skill used to be the rule. More lawyers with time on their hands made that a bad thing.

I still remember the time on the Jay Leno show where he went up to a bunch of NASCAR Winston Cup racers at Daytona and asked them if they thought they could pass the Florida driver's test. Dale Earnhardt Sr. said no, because he can't read Spanish.
