New Disease Appearing In United States
Health officials are sending up a red flag about a dangerous new sexually transmitted disease.
Dozens of cases have surfaced in Europe and now patients here in the United States are being diagnosed with the disease. Some cases are being reported in New York.
It is called lymphogranuloma venereum, or LGV. It is a strain of chlamydia that can damage the bowels and scar the genitals.
Right now, those most at risk include gay and bisexual men. Most of the people who have it also have HIV or AIDS.
While there are cases in New York, Atlanta and San Francisco, the Philadelphia Health Department tells NBC 10's HealthWatch that it has no reported cases in the city.
However, doctors in our area are aware of it and are on alert to look for it.
