Mopar bankruptcy

Seems like a huge, huge risk for Obama. The Chrysler bankruptcy could turn out very good, or very bad... and if it turns out very bad, that's going to piss off a lot of union labor. Organized labor has been a big part of the Democratic party base. If forcing the company into bankruptcy backfires, leaving tens of thousands of union employees in the lurch... well, that sure would make the 2012 Democratic primaries very interesting.

The germans got chrysler and chrysler did not take advantage of their technology to improve their cars.

Now they are allied with the italians? the italians? Even if they were willing to take advantage of their technology, I doubt they would learn much.

I suspect you're right.

Well... I wouldn't say "Chrysler did not take advantage of their technology" so much as "Daimler-Benz took the hottest car company going, which was making so much profit it didn't know what to do with all the money, sunk its teeth in, sucked out all the cash until Chrysler was billions of dollars in debt, made the cars heavier with worse interior surface quality, then tossed Chrysler aside like a dead hooker when no more blood could be squeezed from the stone."

and like your first post said..those little details will be long forgotten come 2012.

Labor cost (union labor) for a new car is less than 10% of the cost. The remainder of the cost of a new car are marketing, design and engineering, raw materials, executive compensation and other costs that are not directly related to the manufacture of the vehicle.

Bankruptcy will allow the car company to renegotiate the terms of the union contract. It will also allow them to renegotiate the terms of other contracts that drag them under. If I owned a company that big, I would tie executive bonuses to the health of the company and give stock options to the workers. It has been proven that when employees at the lower rung of the ladder are given stock they become more interested in company profits and increase productivity.

If Chrysler is a dead hooker, then GM is a badly beaten gang bang rape victim
with severe head trauma!

The Chrysler headquarters building is a spectacular sight from I-75 in Michigan. But the Auburn Hills edifice and its sprawling campus sit in the middle of one of the most economically depressed areas in the country. When the building was erected in the early 1990s, it was designed so it could be repurposed into a shopping mall without too much modification if the perennially troubled Chrysler should go out of business.

The hedge funds will get ~.20 on the dollar and the unions will get 55% control of the company. I guess Obama has given the unions that gift he promised them.

The PM of Great Britain gets 25 DVDs that won't play in Britain.

The Queen of England gets an iPod.

The Unions get an entire car company.

I guess the PM and the Queen should have stumped for Obama.

True, the destruction of the American economy IS silly shit.
Not to worry though, long before November 6, 2012 even the Demorats
will be calling for Osama's head onna pole, sadly it will not be
because we are in a depression far worse than the 1930's
(which we will be) but because of the looming 3rd world war this
loonie's foreign policy has precipitated. Crazy old Joe knows…

yer all gonna be driving Japs cars soon (if ya ain't already)

Ford outsold Toyota this April...Struth!!!

While its rivals stay afloat with billions in government aid, Ford grabbed a bigger slice of the American car market in April with record sales of its fuel-efficient Fusion. Those results pushed it past Toyota to retake its post as the nation's No. 2 car seller.

Even though Ford's monthly sales tumbled 32 percent from a year earlier, it captured 16 percent of the total market. Most of those gains came at the expense of General Motors and Chrysler, which unlike Ford are dependent on federal help.

Overall U.S. autoæsales reported Friday fell 34 percent from a year earlier. Automakers sold about 820,000 light vehicles in April, about 38,000 fewer than in March but still a big improvement over January's 27-year low.

Well, Ford does have a powerful marketing tool in "We're American but we're not going bankrupt and not on federal aid, so we'll still be around to honor the warranty and you'll still be able to get parts three or four years from now."

As for the Chrysler headquarters/mall conversion... the 1962 Ford Fairlane I learned to drive in was built in the building that is now the Great Mall of Milpitas, just outside of San Jose.

Well what it really boils down to, is that for years American cars were laughable in comparison to imports. I had and 89 Mitsubishi, and my old lady had a 98 Escort, and I know the Escort motor is made by Mazda, and it's the only thing I liked better about that car. The Escort, with fat high performance tires, didn't handle or hold the road anywhere near as good as the Mitsubishi with the thinnest tiny R13s on it. Except for the engine the Mitsubishi kicked the Escort's ass in every measurable category.

Mitsubishi also made the infamous "Zero" fighter in WWII, and for the longest time it was putting American fighters to shame. You see Americans are great and designing new things, (the car, the airplane, the VCR, etc. etc.) but what the Japanese do is take our designs and improve upon them. There is nobody to blame but the American car companies. Years ago I had some cool old Mopars, but I also owned a mid 80s "K" car and that POS, makes me almost happy Chrysler is gonna go under. That and I'd like to never see another PT Cruiser in my life!

Jim wasn't bitching about Bush screwing up the economy. He was bitching about ipods and dvds and unions.

Nope, even the Repubes will have recognized what a vast improvement he is over the last guy.

Nope, this foreign policy is intelligent foreign policy. The last guy was the one pushing towards a 3rd world war.
