I listened to a 15 minute BBC broadcast about nanotechnology tonight. I was very disappointed to hear that an awful amount of work and money is now required to persaude (easy fears) created not only by plain old 'new-stuff, ahhh fear change' but largly by unfounded worst case scenarios told by 'some important sounding guy', one of which was nanomachines becoming intellegent and taking over the world. That is just outrageous. Scientists are having a damn hard time just to make neural networks and things that simulate the brain and higher functions. Then getting the things to self replicate is yet another massive leap forwards. To top it all off theses self replicating hell bent machines are nanabots.....hahahahahahah to that.
Let there be the science first. Let time tell. Holding back such technology is holding back mankind and decreasing our chances or surviving the future. The price to pay for dominating the planet is that it problems faced become increasing more technical and intellectual. Nanotechnology is one such technology that mankind requires.
Social climates, views, reservations etc change relatively quickly with respect to scientific (encompassing technological) revoltions. People expect so much from science. For instance most people expect cough syrup to work and new improved ones to offered from time to time. Such things were made possible by a scientific revolution (bacteria - penacillin etc) but that technology is now tiring. Stronger penacillin resistant bateria are emerging so our current treatments are becoming ineffectual and will become obsolete in time.
Are you now seeing the need for such like nanotechnology and GM foods?
Please don't get scared away by mr nobody telling you a possible (not probable there is a difference) worst case scenario. Don't go to school tommorow because an old satellite fragment may hit your school - it's possible but not probable.
