OK, the general idea with allies is that if one gets attacked, the other members of the treaty should help.

France, Germany, and Belgium, in a prime example of European courage, are fucking up again. They blocked a vote where the U.S. proposed boosting the defense, not offense, for Turkey because Iraq might decide to attack Turkey (a NATO member). Now this is just cowardly. And sickening.

However, there are some good news...

The U.S. is boosting Turkey's defenses regardless of NATO's decision. Once again, it is the United States (and perhaps Britain) that are doing all the work. Again. I think its time to boot off France, Germany, and Belgium from the NATO membership list.

NATO has been a defunct organization for a decade. It failed at its primary 3 goals and can't get it back. Its time to fold the tent and sell off the office chairs.

I agree with you. With the recent admissions of former Soviet block nations, NATO is just about defunct. I also think that this new anglophone alliance (United States, Britian, and Australia [pity that Canada isn't helping out, sigh...]) shows a lot more potential. The United States and Britain has the armed forces, and I'm pretty sure Australia has *some* forces too. Thats probably the greater part of the military in the western world since the EU has nothing of value, and Russia is just about bankrupt. I think the only real competition is then China.

Chinas hardware is circa 1975 and they hardly have a navy to speak of. They aren't designed to do much more than hoof it on foot within their local region. Their 2 largest neighbors (India and Russia) maintain rather large armies that keep China a touch at bay. All they have is raw numbers. Their quality and command and control are sub par.

Thanks to backroom dealing, slick willie bumped their missile technology up 40 years though.

However, they do have information. Lots of US intelligence to be specific thanks to the Clinton administration if you believe it.
Personally i do. Chinas military will be changing drastically even over the next decade imo.

 I type with my penis so I'm always late...btw Gonz, aren't you glad Tricky Dick restored our relations with China?

Since they don't support war at this time they also don't support war preparations at this time. Where you get the cowardly and sickening part I'm not sure.

Something about securing peace & preparing for war comes to mind.

France. Sheesh. The same country who's security council veto kept the UN from sending troops to prevent the genocide of 800,000 men, women, and children? But there were some UN forces sent... France sent troops on the side of the Hutus who committed the worst genocide since the holocaust.

Yes, the world should follow their brilliant decision making.

U.S.-French clashes

Disputes between the United States and France are nothing new. Some of the major crises in the past 50 years:

1954-55: West German rearmament. West Germany is allowed to rearm over French opposition.

1956: Suez crisis. Britain, France and Israel invade Egypt after it nationalizes the Suez Canal, a strategic international waterway. The United States intervenes on Egypt's side and forces a withdrawal.

1966: Withdrawal from NATO's integrated command. French President Charles de Gaulle kicks out U.S. forces and asserts France's right to operate independently and develop its own nuclear deterrent.

1979-85: U.S. deployment of medium-range nuclear missiles in Europe. A Europe-wide anti-nuclear movement burgeons in opposition to deploying cruise and Pershing II missiles in West Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

1986: U.S. bombs Libya. France and Spain refuse U.S. planes use of their airspace.
