WASHINGTON - Eager to please a key Florida constituency, President Bush directed his secretary of state and his Cuban-born housing secretary Friday to recommend ways to achieve a transition to democracy in Cuba after 44 years under Fidel Castro.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Housing Secretary Mel Martinez will chair a panel that will "plan for the happy day when Castro's regime is no more and democracy comes to the island," Bush said during a Rose Garden ceremony.

"The transition to freedom will present many challenges to the Cuban people and to America, and we will be prepared," the president said.

:D he tightened the embargo on Cuba the other day...The man is insane ya know....

Now....What was it you were saying about America not trying to dominate the world? Something about , "..as long as they behave and don't threaten the world..."

So much for your thoughts on that :rofl4:

Oh, like the embargo was invented by a Bush...that would be the other superpower family (you know, teh one with the two dead brothers & the the third staying drunk & stupid to avoid joining them)

But do you really think that was a pressing issue? Have Cuban cigars been showing up in your stores? maybe if he looked around he could find things a little more important to focus on...ya think?

I do have to wonder, was it the census takers we sent there that found out that the residents of Cuba want to become Democratic? Or perhaps is was the soldiers in Guantanamo Bay with thier super listening devices that have overheard conversations that told Bush, who knows.

:D I sure hope it wasn't military intelligence that hes acting on...If it is we're liable to find out that there is more of that 'credible evidence' that Saddam and his weapons are in Cuba....

Maybe it was the thousands of cubans who got the hell out of there and came back telling us the terrible stories of things happening down there from personal experience?

Doubt those things happen anymore. I dont know for sure but Id guess much of the population lives in fear and intimidation.
