Southern Discomfort
KSLA-TV reports that a mural depicting African Americans picking cotton which has been hanging in a Texas post office since 1939 is now embarassing to some people and they want it removed.

The mural hanging in the Linden post office was intended to depict life as it was in the 1930s when it was commissioned, a post office official says.

Protestors want it taken down, saying it depicts an “old South mentality” that has no place in the modern world. They plan to picket the post office July 9 to make their case.

**end**

First, we hear bitching and moaning if there aren't enough black folk on each TV show, magazine ad, commercial, news anchor...everything has to be balanced across race lines. Now we get a whole picture with nothing but black folk in it, and they wanna bitch about that too. What gives? :devious:

Hey y'all, I got some breaking news here. Get ready, this is really gonna rock your world. *ahem* A hundred years or so ago, folk in the South picked cotton. Thank you, that is all. Black, white, polka dotted...didn't matter. It's an agricultural region. It requires work. That don't make it racist. It makes it period art. If you can't grasp that concept, the next flight for Paris leaves from somewhere here in a minute. Look into it.

*sigh* Sooner or later they're going to get to you and me. We're white American males, there have to be a whole list of reasons why that's offensive.

A few years back, I actually witnessed some negroes picking cotton. I suppose they never got the memo.

They gonna have a hard time getting to me, the razor wire gets delivered next Tuesday. :lloyd:

I'm offended by razor wire. It means that I can't drop by for some of that Southern Hospitality that makes the area below the Mason-Dixon so appealing. :D

His being offended & your being offended at his being offended is offensive. Stop it or I'll call a lawyer.

Blatant offensiveness in relation to my not-so-blatant offensiveness.
