TEL AVIV, Israel — At least three people were killed and as many as 30 were injured after a homicide bombing (search) destroyed a restaurant on a popular beachside promenade early Wednesday.
The restaurant, called Mike's Place, is on Herbert Samuel Esplanade, which is near the U.S. Embassy.
"There has been a terror attack on the seafront," Tel Aviv (search) police spokeswoman Shlomit Hertzberg said. Ambulances raced to the scene and casualties were carried away on stretchers.
The bomb blew the front off the restaurant and demolished walls, doors and furniture inside. Tel Aviv police commander Yossi Sedbon told Israel Army Radio that the explosion was apparently set off by a homicide bomber.
A witness identified only by his first name, Gil, told Army Radio that a security guard at the restaurant prevented the bomber from entering.
