The U.S. Navy's newest destroyer, USS MOMSEN (DDG 92), is scheduled to be commissioned at Port Panama City on August 28, 2004. A ship's commissioning is a major event for the U.S. Navy and is a milestone for the crew of MOMSEN. It will also stand out as one of the most significant military events in the history of Bay County, Florida.

MOMSEN (DDG 92) is named in honor of Vice Admiral Charles "Swede" Momsen, who is considered the father of the U.S. Navy's diving programs. In recognition of his many accomplishments, the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida was named in his honor.

What makes USS Momsen unique?

MOMSEN truly is built with state of the art electronics and weapon systems. We are one of five DDGs that will be equipped with the Remote Mine Hunting System (RMS). The RMS was developed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Florida and is the first generation of remote controlled surface vehicles.

RMS is an air-breathing semi-submersible that is equipped with a minehunting sonar. Its purpose is to go over-the-horizon and search the undersea battle space and detect the presence of mines.

The Remote Minehunting Vehicle (RMV) is carried in it's own shelter on the ship's starboard side. It is lowered to the water by a unique dual-arm davit.

The Man:

Diver, Submariner, Innovator, Visionary, Hero, Legend

Charles Bowers Momsen
Vice Admiral, United States Navy
June 21, 1896- May 25, 1967

United States Naval Academy Class of 1920

Charles "Swede" Momsen was a diving officer, officer in the submarine service, technological innovator with a vision, hero to some, and legendary within the Navy.

  • Invented the world's first Submarine Escape
    Breathing Device, the MOMSEN LUNG,
    in 1929.
  • Developed the first Helium-Oxygen gas mixure
    for divers in 1938.
  • Designed the basic tear-shaped hull of today's
    modern Subs.

A hearty welcome to the Commanding Officer of the USS Momsen, Commander Ed Kenyon, USN, and to all his officers and crewmembers, Bravo Zulu! We know that you are equipped and fully capable of handling the many challenges ahead, and we wish you fair winds and following seas!

Should this be moved to the Science and Technology forum?

It just doesn't seem to fit in amongst the political and "lifestyle" debates . . .
