Paul WHO???

I just read this article, and was pleasantly surprised. Most folks now have never heard of Paul Robeson.

The strong, humanist glow of Paul Robeson, the legendary Black actor, singer, athlete, intellectual and civil rights activist, will grace the U.S. Postal service’s Black Heritage stamp series come January.

In my ignorance I don't know who he is. I don't recognize his picture either...more info on the man please.

Because of his admiration for many aspects of Soviet culture and society, as well as his publicly stated belief that black Americans should not wage war on behalf of their own oppressors (the U.S. government) against the Soviet Union,

You had me until that

I will get to the FoIA stuff later...that looks interesting but...BUT...he had a penchant for communism

Nope. He was accused of having a penchant for communism. In his biography, you'll see that he did not agree with it. ;) He just didn't like racism.

what I read was he admired the soviet unions seemingly lack racism

During that period, a lot of people were accused of having a penchant for communism. Thanks for the links, Gato.

Absolutely correct. At the time the Soviets claimed that they were not racist, so that was what Paul Robeson liked. Give the man a cookie. :D

Gonz...One more thing. A quote from the article...
For efforts such as this, along with speaking out against such things as the economically discriminating poll tax practiced against Blacks in the South to keep them from voting, Robeson was labeled a Communist (which he wasn’t) and persecuted by politicians and bigots. A riot ensued when his sold-out concert in Peekskill, N.Y., in the late 1940s, was disrupted by Robeson-haters.

I'd have imagined him to be better known. Seems I've known of him forever. A man worthy of the honor. Spent much of his life in Europe because of the witch hunt for communists that was going on here.

Accused of being a communist AND Squiggy likes him....Ok Gato, or whoever you are, what did you do with the real Gato_Solo :D

Off to play in the great state pf Ozhio : puke:

Hold the fort, I wanna read when I get home

OTC could always take up a fund-raiser & get poor ole Gonz a laptop so he can stay in touch
