The former president of the Philippines has died at the age of 76 after a battling colon cancer for over a year.

In 1986, Corizon "Cory" Aquino wrenched power away from the former dictator and friend of former president Ronald Regan, Ferdinand Marcos, bringing democracy back to the people of the Philippines. Taking office she inherited widespread poverty, a $28 billion debt and a looming Marxist insurgency. Her presidency survived 7 coup attempts.

She was revered by her people and was the champion of change for her country. After taking office she changed the presidency to a single 6-year term and created a US-like constitution.

When her presidential term ended she moved out of the political spotlight, despite the urging of the people to remain in office. She fully believed in the "People Power" movement which her husband had lead before her, and which she lead after his assassination in a Manila airport in 1983.

The Philippines are observing a 10-day mourning period.
