Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, condemned America's Christian right yesterday for propagating hatred against Muslims, in what appeared to be a coordinated White House campaign to confront anti-Islamic rhetoric from a constituency that includes some of the Bush administration's staunchest supporters.

Days after the televangelist Pat Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network that "what the Muslims want to do to the Jews is worse" than the Holocaust, Mr Powell told a gathering in Washington: "This kind of hatred must be rejected."

The escalation in anti-Muslim comments from conservative Christians includes a recent claim by Jerry Falwell, the country's leading rightwing Baptist, that the prophet Mohammed was "a terrorist".

Veteran evangelist Jimmy Swaggart followed that this week by calling Mohammed a "sex deviant" and a pervert and demanding that Muslim students in the US be expelled. "We ought to tell every other Muslim living in this nation that if you say one word, you're gone," he said.

As the likelihood grows of a war in Iraq there are strategic benefits for the White House in convincing Muslims that it would not be a war against their religion.

The administration's increased willingness to confront the Christian right reflects the Republicans' sweeping victories in last week's mid-term elections, reducing Mr Bush's reliance on the extreme fringes of his supporter base.

Jerry Falwell controls 80 million votes, and he had the balls to say it on national TV. Thats why the President can't possibly refuse a call from him. Look at the time when he called the White House to tell them stop condeming Israel for defending themselves... Not a single peep the next few days.

80 million? I say that's an extremely exaggerated estimate. If he had that many he'd be president by now. Although i do get your point.

Thats not much of a slam. I thought it was going to be something along the lines of Powell issuing a memorandum declaring the Christian right as being a bunch of badger raping dick heads.. or something.

Jimmy Swaggart said WHAT???[/siz]

Well, hell. I guess it takes one to know one, eh?

Speaking as a Christian myself, these fundies really tick me off.
Sure, a large portion of the world's current nutters are hiding under the umbrella of Islam, but so what?
700 years ago the Jews and Moslems were on the run from nutters using the umbrella of Christianity. It's the nutters that need the smack in the head(tac nukes, anyone?), not the umbrella they're using on any given occasion.

extremisism and fundamentalism from either side only serves to divide and generate hatred.

fundamentalism doesnt generate hatred - its those who react against fundamentalism that breed hatred

a fundamentalist alone in a forest generates no hatred

difficult to see what grounds they might be expelled if they are american citizens

Hardly. I think the tenor of it is that American born muslims are too westernized and addicted to tv, free travel, and fast food to consider becoming bomb martyrs. The international muslim base is still very much mentally aligned with the old world and runs a greater risk of being dangerous. Its the same kind of defensive reaction that comes up during every war by every country. Reactions by the governments are varied ... but private citizens can always be trusted to spout rhetoric to fever up their fan base.

im suprised you think he slammed them Hex. he said that we need to reject the hatred that they are spreading. whereas the fundamentalist chrsitians are slamming Islam in general. thats not very chrsitian of them. besides why hate a race or religion for the acts of a few.

You're kidding, right? Agreed, a single fundamentalist, with absolutely no one to even talk to, is null and void.

Fundamentalism, however, involves many people, often holding viewpoints that are polar opposites. This WILL breed hate, and fundamentalism (read the word, it's a concept, not an individual) is at the heart of it.

Please learn basic logical thinking. Thank you.

First mistake, don't assume that my words are my opinion unless i specifically say so. Many times i'm just trying to spark conversations.
