Prodi issues call to arms

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, on Wednesday, told EU leaders that it was time to militarise or be left by the wayside.

In a keynote address to the European Parliament, Mr Prodi said "The moment of truth for Europe's foreign and defence policy has come."

"The choice is clear: do we want to be left out, all of us, from the management of world affairs? Or do we want to play a part, on an equal footing with our allies, in building a new world order?"

Mr Prodi sought to impel EU institutions and national governments to support building joint defence capabilities by upping the stakes considerably, claiming Europes very future may hang on the way it faces up to the current crisis.

Do not miss the opportunity
The Presidium of the Convention on the Future of Europe is due to submit defence proposals next month after its President, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing meets with heads of state in Athens.

The Commission's president would like to see the recommendations go further beyond merely the results of the convension's working group, which did not even reach agreement over member states having the duty to defend each other if one is attacked.

"I appeal to all its members: let us not waste this opportunity!" he pleaded.

His intervention was broadly backed by parliamentarians who feel estranged with what Green leader Daniel Cohn-Bendit described as the US' mission to "free the world with the help of god."

Mini summit welcomed
Mr Prodi welcomed a Belgian initiative - backed by France, Germany and Luxembourg - to hold a mini summit on augmenting the EU's defence capabilities.

The meeting is scheduled for the 29 April in Brussels, shortly after leaders meet in Athens.

He stressed that the door should be left open for all member states to join in, but told journalists later that a "more cooperative stance from some member governments" was needed.

The UK has so far been luke warm about the prospect fearing such a move would undermine NATO and so Europe's partnership with the US.

President of the Parliament Pat Cox was of a different opinion. "A series of mini-Europes falls short of the one Europe we need and want."

A proxy war
Mr Prodi's spokesman later denied reports that the president wanted to see the end of NATO.

"The view of the President is that NATO should in future have two strong pillars, an American and a European one. In fact, the President wants to strengthen NATO. "

But the message was clear, Europe will not be dictated to.

"We Europeans are not from Venus, as some would have us believe. The peoples of this old Europe have a long and bloodthirsty past behind us" Mr Prodi said in what will be seen as a snipe at some in the current US administration.

"A past that has taught us to base our Union in law and to work for an international order founded on right, not on might. But we know that humanitarian policies alone are not enough. And it is not enough to outstrip the other main players in the area of development aid policy."

"We know the world will not take heed of us until we put an end to our divisions. Until we stop relying on the European Union for economic growth and the United States for security" Mr Prodi said, before insisting "there is nothing anti-American in what I am saying."

You know, when we evolve a little more intelligence, perhaps we can stop history from repeating itself (if we don't all kill each other first).

I see. We should learn from Europes killing of 6 million Jews and cause of 2 world wars, the two true world wars that they are never going to instigate this type of action ever again?

Yeah then why have they been sending Iraq materials and chemicals for the last 10 years as also Russia, and China helping Iraq build up their military?

I think in the end many in europe and Asia would like to see the death of Israel itself. No one will openly admit to it but the strong consensus I feel from many in Europe is that their thirst for blood will not be complete until the nation of Israel is destroyed and the US has come under the power of the Un and EU.

Yeah I am all for Europe standing on their own two shaky feet. It was only Yesterday they were still divided behind the Iron curtain and only a few days earlier that they tried to kill all the Jews and minorities such as the 3 million Gypsies that were killed in Europe. That is alot of human death. Nothing compared to the deaths in Afganistan and Iraq.

Why don't we reflect on the 3 million Koreans that were killed because of the UN inadequacies. They did a fine job of overseeing the Korean situation in the late 40's didn't they?

How many Bosnians etc were killed in the modern day Hitler style genocide?

Yeah Europe is really in fine control!

I think the time has come for Europe to try and control the world and become a military power:rolleyes: Last time they tried it the US had to come and put down Germanies aggression.

It was not too long ago that French was the universal language, OOPs not any more. I am sure that pissed a few of those frenchman.

I can understand Europes frustration that the US has only been a true coutry for less than 200 years and they have been around for more than 3000 years and the US has become the leading world power.

Europes fasad is that they are so "nice and cuddly" while their recent past has shown otherwise.

How long has Europe been at war with its self? Has it ever really stopped? The war between Britian and France is ancient as also currently idle Roman aggression. We all know the history.

What it all boils down to is who wants to be in control.

My question is who should be in control?

Personally I don't give a shit who controls Europe, I do care though who controls the US.

Was it that long ago that Europe has forgotten about WWII? Who started that bloody war? Surely not the US or its policies? Largely it was the hatred of the Jews in Germany.

Well the UN gets 75% of its funding from the US and who knows how much military support? How many Chinese were sent to the Balkans during the genocide occuring there during the 90's when UN was supposed to be in control of it?

Anyone know? Yet they have ultimate VETO power.

Here is a little reminder of where WWI started and who started it.
How W.W.I. Started

In June 1914, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, both from Austria-Hungary, were shot dead in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This triggered W.W.I as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Austria-Hungary was backed by Germany. Serbia was backed by Russia. Germany declared war on Russia, then France because both countries teamed up with Serbia. Then Germany invaded Belgium. Britain then declared war on Germany, so Australia was automatically at war.

And now WWII,

1934 October 9,
The Foreign Minister of France, Barthou and King Alexander of Yugoslavia are killed by Croatian terrorists in Marseille, France.
1934 December,
The Japanese stopped the Washington Naval Treaty.

1934,
Italy moves against Abyssinia, fightings between Italian and Abyssinian forces on the border of Italian Somaliland and Ethiopia.
Badoglio, Field Marshal Pietro (1871-1956)
Badoglio served with distinction during the First World War. After the war he became Chief of Staff, Governor of Libya and Viceroy of Eithiopia. He resigned as Chief of Staff after the defeat of Italian forces in Greece in December 1940. From 1942 Badoglio was a key conspirator against Mussolini and in July 1943 succeeded him. He signed the armistice with the Allied forces in September 1943.
1935 January,
The Saar region vote (91%) for a Union with Germany again.
1935 March 16,
Germany forced compulsory military service. Germany presents the existence of the Luftwaffe, infringe The Treaty of Versailles.

1935 June 18,
The Anglo-German Naval Agreement is signed, ratio of tonnage 35:100. Anglo-German Naval Convention signals Britain's unwillingness to defend the Versailles settlement.
1935 September 15,
Promulgation of the Nuremberg Laws relegates Jews to a separate second-class status in Germany, prohibits intermarriage and sexual relations with Germans.
1935 October 3,
Italian forces invade Abyssinia. Italian would like to be the great power around the Mediterranean.
The League of Nations decides economic sanctions against Italië.

1936 March 7,
German military re-occupation of the Rhineland successfully challenges France's willingness to act in defense of the Versailles settlement.

Seems France and Germany are always at the heart of major world wars with germany being the aggressor?

Problem is alot of france didn't know back then if they should be socialist or democratic. Seems today many of them still have no clue what to do there.

One thing they do know though is that they all should unite again?

That will solve all problems?

The EU was one great leap for them.

Nice lie!

I think after WWII much of Continental Europe gave the USA that old pat on the back saying thank you. Thanks for saving us from a horrible dictator and probable death.

Under their breath though they were saying

"first chance we get we will destroy you and take control of your country, kill and rape you."

That is becoming more evident in this age.

Yeah history does repeat itself only this time it will be Europe as the agressor and the US defending its homeland both politically and possibly with this assholes words above militarily.

I know Dubya sees Europes plans. Why would it have changed in the last 50 years after WWII.
