Reading an article in Time...got a question

i'm sorry to say i only scan-read it as it its 4 pages and i'm quite busy right this min, i promise to read it all properly later.

channel 5 is the latest of our non-pay terrestrial channels. it was launched about 6 years ago and is still a fledgeling in the terrestrial tv market. we get bbc1, bb2, itv, channel4 and channel5 on standard analogue signal for 'free' [free meaning we pay a licence fee of 100quid a year that funds mainly the bbc]. all the channels except the beeb have adverts to fund them. you must pay the licence fee to watch tv.

channel 5 would be sought after because it is in the position of currently having a potentially very wide audience, in comparison with satelite or cable.

So those five channels are received via bunny ears? Is channel 5 any good? What does it compare to, and what is its target audience?

Question... why pay 100 pounds a year for 5 channels? If you choose not to pay, how do they enforce no TV for you? I mean, it is broadcasted right? Is it encrypted and do you need a special box? Or just the bunny ears? And isn't $15 or so a month for 40 channels a better deal (basic cable?)?

thanks

100quid gets you 5 channels all on bunny ears, they enforce it with scanners and hand-held detectors. they're getting pretty smart these days.
you pay the 100 regardless of whether you get cable, the licence fee goes to the bbc mostly and pays for all its programming, radio, digital stuff, world service, and web sites etc.

to be honest i think you get pretty good value, bbc had no ads and makes some of the best tv in the world. they're independent, not owned by shareholders or government so have the freedom of the media and are generally unbiased much of it is pretty high-brow programming.

channel 5 is a bit of a joke in the uk to be honest. if anyhting is tacky or sleazy it's referred to as channel 5 material. for a long time it was known only for showing bad soft porn on friday nights.
it's improved a lot though, it bought up a couple of good soaps, shows reasonable films and is getting a reputation for good history documentaries.

it still has the lowest market share, bbc1 and itv have the biggest.

bear in mind our cable and sat aren't as well priced as yours. i have basic cable at £15 a month [$20]. for then i get about 5 extra channels [sky1, e4 and ukgold are the only ones worth watching too]. for a fuller range on satellite [sky] you'd pay £40-50 and still have channels you'd have to pay more on.

When I read an article it bugs the hell out of me anything I don't understand. Right now I have basic cable and cable internet for CA$49.95 [~22 pounds] per month.
