A little bit different than Shadowfax's thread, what lyrics do you really like?

I'm going to post American Hi Fi - Flavor of the Week, prolly because I've been listening to it quite a bit in the fast few days... (why? lets just say it reflects college life pretty well [I don't really agree with the ethics in it though])

She paints her nails and she don't know
he's got her best friend on the phone
she'll wash her hair
his dirty clothes are all he gives to her
and he's got posters on the wall
of all the girls he wished she was
and he's everything to her

[chorus:]
Her boyfriend, he don't know
anything about her
he's too stoned, Nintendo
i wish that i could make her see
she's just the flavor of the weak

It's friday night and she's all alone
he's a million a miles away
she's dressed to kill
the tv's on
he's connected to the sound
and he's got pictures on the wall
of all the girls he's loved before
and she knows all his favorite songs

[repeat chorus]

Yeah!
her boyfriend, he don't know
anything about her
he's too stoned, he's too stoned
he's too stoned, he's too stoned

[repeat chorus]

Yeah she's the flavor of the weak
she makes me weak

Turin Brakes - Feeling Oblivion

Cub scouts are screaming,
Needing ice-creaming
And oh, the pleasures of June.
I'm in a parked car,
Flowers seem friendly,
And people in hallways feel walls.

Now it is night time.
Maybe we're cruising,
Avoiding the anti-cruise.

Oh I don't really know where we are.

If things get real,
Promise to take me somewhere else.

By the time,
Fear takes me over,
Will we still be rolling
And feeling oblivion...

Once in a while now,
The lie in a laughter can burn through the hole in my ear.
Like a man with glasses,
Catching a sunbeam and burning the skin of a kid.

Hyper-real fragments disturbing the stagnants
Of almighty fear.
Well, I'll just go under the water.

doves | the sulphur man

fate
brought you
brought you next to ghosts
they
talk in code
looking for the way out
i hope, I hope
i hope you want to live a day
and learn to cope
i hope you find what matters

through the streets and on your own
almost lost and almost gone
we'll be looking all we can
we'll be searching for the sulphur man

pills stop you
stopped you feeling life
fall
into a home
sympathy and all
a soul in tatters
a soul as black as coal
i hope, I hope
i wish you could find what matters

through the streets and on your own
almost lost and almost home
we'll be looking all we can
we'll be looking for the sulphur man

through the streets and on your own
almost lost and almost home
we'll be looking all we can
we'll be searching for the sulphur man

through the streets and on your own
almost lost and almost home
we'll be looking all we can
we'll be searching for the sulphur man

wow, that's pretty cool.
I haven't got into The Doves as yet (apart from their singles). But that's to do with money :D
Really nice lyrics

Where do you look up your lyrics? There's a website I go to but it's only contemporary stuff and has a zillion pop up ads.

btw Scanty, I thought of this song when I looked at your av:

Ballroom Blitz

It's been getting so hard
living with the things you do to me
My dreams are getting so strange
I'd like to tell you everything I see

I see a man at the back
as a matter of fact
his eyes are as red as the sun
And a girl in the corner
let no one ignore her
'cause she thinks she's the passionate one

Oh yeah, it was like lightning,
everybody was frightening
and the music was soothing
and they all started grooving
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

And the man at the back said: "Everyon attack"
and it turned into a ballroom blitz
And the girl in the corner said: "Boy I wanna warn you"
and it turned into a ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz (Repeat 4 times)

I'm reaching out for something
touching nothing´s all I ever do
I softly call you over
When you appear there's nothing left of you

Now the man at the back is ready to crack
as he raises his hands to the sky
And the girl in the corner is everyone's moaner
she could kill you with a wink of her eye

Oh yeah, it was electric,
so frightfully hectic
And the band started leaping,
'cause they all stopped breathing
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

CHORUS
Oh yeah it was like lightning,
everybody was frightening
and the music was soothing
and they all started grooving
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

CHORUS

It's, it's a ballroom blitz (Repeat 3 times)
Yeah, it's a ballroom blitz

The kind of song I typically don't like but I like the lyrics and the video:

The Thunder Rolls
Garth Brooks

Three thirty in the morning
Not a soul insight
The city's lookin' like a ghost town
On a moonless summer night
Raindrops on the windshield
There's a storm moving in
He's headin' back from somewhere
That he never should have been
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

Every light is burnin'
In a house across town
She's pacin' by the telephone
In her faded flannel gown
Askin' for miracle
Hopin' she's not right
Prayin' it's the weather
That's kept him out all night
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

She's waitin' by the window
When he pulls into the drive
She rushes out to hold him
Thankful he's alive
But on the wind and rain
A strange new perfume blows
And the lightnin' flashes in her eyes
And he knows that she knows
And the thunder rolls
And the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The thunder rolls

3rd Verse:
She runs back down the hallway
To the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol
Kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror
He won't do this again
Cause tonight will be the last time
She'll wonder where he's been

doves are cool, the new cd is very nice and has a couple of outstanding tracks on it. the first one is a bit moodier, darker even.

Sorry to keep posting in a row but you inspired me... :)

One of my favorite songs is American Pie by Don McLean. When I get an annoying song in my head, this is the song I think of to get the bad one out. I memorized the words a long time ago and bought the 45 record in the late 80's--I still remember that the song was so long, it cut off in the middle of the song on one side... The other side started with the part "Helter skelter in summer swelter" :D

There's been alot of controversy over the lyrics and what each of them mean... This is what Don himself supposedly said about it in a letter to a magazine that claimed he had told Casey Kasem the meaning of the lyrics:

THE LAST WORD (PROBABLY) ON "AMERICAN PIE"

As you can imagine, over the years I've been asked many times to discuss and explain my song "American Pie" [June25]. I have never discussed the lyrics, but have admitted to the Holly reference in the opening stanzas. I dedicated the album American Pie to Buddy Holly as well in order to connect the entire statement to Holly in hopes of bringing about an interest in him, which subsequently did occur.

This brings me to my point. Casey Kasem never spoke to me and none of the references he confirms my making were made by me. You will find many "interpretations" of my lyrics but none of them by me. Isn't this fun?

Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.

- Don McLean
Castine, Maine

Here is a link to the lyrics interrupted by what they supposedly mean per popular belief: here and here are the lyrics to the song:

Don McLean
American Pie

A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So
{Refrain}
Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the Book of Love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock 'n roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

I started singin'
{Refrain}

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lennon [Lenin?] read a book of Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died

We were singing
{Refrain}

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul out on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the Sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died

We started singing
{Refrain}

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation Lost in Space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrifical rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing
{Refrain}

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music woudn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And they were singing
{Refrain}

They were singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die

Thank you Greenfreak, that is one of my all time favorites too, always wondered about the lyrics myself. Not sure if I'm going to read the notes yet, I kinda like the mystery in it all too.

"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)"
Rupert Holmes

I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long.
Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.
So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed.
And in the personals column, there was this letter I read:

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."

I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean.
But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine.
So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad.
And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad.

"Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape.
At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..

"That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

Once upon a time in the land of Sinaplenty
There lived a king who didn't deserve 2 be
He knew not where he came from
Nor where he was going
He never once said thank U, never please

Now this king he had a subject named Electra
Who loved him with a passion, uncontested
4 him each day she had a smile
But it didn't matter
The king was looking 4 the ladder

Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps U take are no easy road
But the reward is great
4 those who want 2 go

A feeling of self-worth (everybody's looking)
will caress U (for the answers)
The size of the whole wide world will decrease (how the story started)
(and how it will end)
The love of God's creation will undress U
And time spent alone my friend, will cease

Everybody's looking 4 the answers
How the story started and how it will end
What's the use in half a story, half a dream
U have 2 climb all of the steps in between (yeah, we ride)

Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps U take are no easy road (the steps you take are no easy road)
(it's not that easy)
But the reward is great
4 those who want 2 go (I do)

everybody... everybody's looking (Everybody's looking 4 the answers)
for the answers
everybody wants to know how the story (How the story started)
started and how it will end (started and how it will end)
What's the use in half a story, (What's the use in half a story)
half a dream (half of a dream)
U, U gotta climb, U gotta climb (U have 2 climb all)
all of the steps in between (the steps in between)

everybody,
Everybody's looking 4 that ladder (Everybody's looking 4 the ladder)
Everybody wants salvation of the soul (Everybody wants salvation of the soul)
(salvation)
The steps U take are no easy road (the steps you take are no easy road)
(that's for sure)
But the reward is great (the reward is great)
4 those who want 2 go, (4 those who want 2 go)
those who want 2 go

everybody... everybody wants (Everybody's looking 4 the answers)
an answer
anyone who know how the story (How the story started)
started, how it will end (started and how it will end)
will it be lonely in the world (What's the use in half a story)
What's the use? (half of a dream)
(have 2 climb all)
(the steps in between)

Prince - The Ladder

I don't think so, Na...:hmm:

Another oldie...

It's astounding;
Time is fleeting;
Madness takes its toll.
But listen closely...
Not for very much longer.
I've got to keep control.

I remember doing the time-warp
Drinking those moments when
The Blackness would hit me
And the void would be calling...

Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

It's just a jump to the left.
And then a step to the right.
With your hands on your hips.
You bring your knees in tight.
But it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane.

Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me.
So you can't see me, no, not at all.
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intention,
Well secluded, I see all.

With a bit of a mind flip
You're into the time slip.
And nothing can ever be the same.
You're spaced out on sensation.
LIKE YOU'RE UNDER SEDATION

Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Well I was walking down the street just a-having a think
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink.
He shook-a me up, he took me by surprise.
He had a pickup truck, and the devil's eyes.
He stared at me and I felt a change.
Time meant nothing, never would again.

Freako's right, it was used in Wayne's World. Tia Carerra sang it with her band but I think the original is better. :)
