Regarding Israel...

OK a while ago I talked about certain stuff that happened to me while I was in Saudi Arabia. I also mentioned Israel, and that I would get a better story from my dad... Well here it is (Hexploit asked).

During the Iran/Iraq war, certain technologies where on the forbidden list and could not be exported to Iran. Those include figher parts. While we were situated in Saudi Arabia, my family knew a guy, whose name I won't mention right now. He was the commander of a unit whose job it is to locate and retrieve downed air crafts, salvage them, and learn from them. Also, if a disgruntled pilot from Iran flew into Saudi air space, and offer was made to him for a substantial amount of cash + a lifetime pension.

Frequently I would hear my dad talk with this guy, but never before did I really bother to notice the details. Apparently, a lot of the crashed aircrafts from Iraq AND Iran were retrieved by his unit. When they examined the wreckages they found that a LOT of the parts carried the MADE IN ISRAEL insigna. Why? Well, even though the Americans did not approve of Israel selling contraband to Iraq or Iran, as long as they keep shooting at each other and buy the arms from Israel, they won't shoot AT Israel, and Israel will make a tidy profit. Yep, when one side looks like they are winning, they raise the prises or stall selling. That way they kept both sides at war and made millions of dollars. Very smart.

A second part is that a very large part of the Saudi communication network (microwave links especially) were of .... ISRAELI origin. Them Israelis, they know how to do business :p

That's a very interesting story. I believe you however i probably won't repeat the story myself. Israelis think like Americans. They know how to get ahead and i doubt they are selling any cutting edge technology to any would be enemies. Just the stuff they already know how to 'shoot down' so to speak. A balance of power has always been key in the region. This keeps any one arab nation from becoming a great and powerful nation. We did the same things for many years. It's No wonder they hate us. While we're on the subject, have you ever been to Israel or Egypt? I'm just dying to get to see that part of the world. However, i need to learn more of the language and customs before i go. Don't want to look like a terrorist..oops i mean tourist.

I've been to Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuweit. Not Iraq though. :D Saudi is um, interesting. Israel is cool, they actually WELCOME American passport holders.

And spray painting mosques with Hebrew text in Saudi Arabia will earn you a flogging unless you manage to escape. :D So don't do it, or make sure you can get rid of the religious police.

oh and being fluent in Arabic helps, and remember you give money to the police man so he can "buy something nice for his children".

That is interesting LL, I'm a little jealous, I haven't traveled to the extent you have, in fact, only left the US once, and that was back in 86 to go to the Worlds Fair in Canada. Not sure that even counts. I'd really like to take a World Tour someday, but need to save a little more before I do.

I really liked the excitement that goes along with traveling. Which is why I'm kinda bored here. Nothing really exciting to do, and if you get into trouble you get a record. Which I don't want in North America. The world is a big place, and I want to see it. My dad has been to even more countries in the world, I would guess half of them. I guess it kind of runs in the family.

There are a lot of advantages, but one of the disadvantages is well, you don't live a normal life in a neighborhood with other kids. Friends were limited, hence the closeness we reached. We only have each other, and if you fuck that relationship up, no one will be there for you. I couldn't start dating until I moved to Canada either. Well I could in a very limited way. Public kissing? A big no-no there, and I almost got arrested once for doing it.

Advantages are well, you see different people, different customs, idiots, smart guys, and so on. I also got to do things other kids can only hope for... play with guns like you wouldn't believe, throw grenades, blow things up, skydive, play in an F-15 cockpit (of F-16, I don't rightly remember right now), and so forth. Which I appreciate quite tremendously.

Its a toss up. I wouldn't trade my past for anything, but sometimes I'm saddened what I missed compared to normal kids. :)
