Bush Urges Amendment Banning Gay Marriage

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush urged approval of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages on Tuesday, pushing a divisive social issue to the center of the election campaign and setting a clear policy contrast with Democratic challengers John Kerry and John Edwards.

Bush said "activist judges and local officials" from Massachusetts to San Francisco to New Mexico were attempting to redefine marriage and "change the most fundamental institution of civilization" by allowing same-sex weddings. "On a matter of such importance, the voice of the people must be heard," he said.

this was bound to happen. Bush was pushing for it before but now hell be more aggressive in his agenda

And as he pointed out, it would be up to the states whether to have a Civil Union. Marriage has been defined for over 3000 years. Some activists along with their powerhungry judges are trying to destroy teh very fabric of society. Reminds me of The Communist Manifesto.

i think that enough has changed in society over the last 3000 years to mean marriage can come up to the times. it's hardly that marriage has remained untouched for all that time either, there were long periods where it was by no means an equal partnership, for example.

I think you have that backwards, Gonz...The federal government has no business endorsing a religious definition. They should establish the 'Civil Union' requirements for the purpose of the law. MARRIAGE is a religious matter.

Y'know, I'd like to see a straight vote on this. No electoral colleges, or biased influence. Just straight, one man, one vote, and see where it lands.

:roflmao: Sorry, but the pun was there...

As for a vote, you must remember that the US is a REPUBLIC. A democratic republic, but a republic just the same. It's not "majority rule", it's "majority influence". The only thing I object to is the link homosexuals are trying to make with the civil rights struggles of others.

I thought it was a Constitutional republic or is that the same as a democratic republic?
