This man has done more, in a couple of weeks, to help the peace efforts than you ever did.

JERUSALEM — The armed uprising against Israel was a mistake and should end, interim Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published Tuesday, for the first time speaking in public about a long-held view.

Abbas, the current PLO leader, is the front-runner to replace Yasser Arafat in Jan. 9 elections for Palestinian Authority president. Abbas, a pragmatist who opposes violence, has the support of Israel and the international community.

Anyone giving odds how long poor old Mahmoud will live?
I for one don't see him passing peacefully on in a French hospital in his mid 70's.

It's a real shame but I do believe your right.

This article paints so rosy a potential picture I couldn't finish reading it.
All my life I've heard of troubles in the Middle East.
Could 30-40 years from now on my deathbed, I look back and see this period in history
as the turning point in the Middle East?
Of course having grown-up with the cold war and the supposed threat of nuclear annihilation from the Soviet Union (those funky duck and cover civil defense drills in first grade) who knew that one day out of the blue the Evil Empire would crumble and fade away with a whimper?

The odds of a large calibre between the shoulder blades outweighs the odds of getting Hamas to back him by a long shot.

Turning point? Bet yer bottom dollar. Those with a less clear long term vision only see todays death & destruction.
