Tax cuts

work every time they're tried.

State government revenues are soaring again, ending a period of budget shortfalls and prompting proposals for tax cuts and new spending initiatives for the first time since 2000.
Tax collections rose to a record $600 billion in the states last year, up 7.2% over 2003, the biggest increase since 2000. The money is rolling in even faster this year as many states report double-digit revenue increases through April.

There are reasons for taxes - like paying for necessary military actions (which have next to no effect on STATE spending). I agree with tax cuts in general, but I think the last round was poorly timed, and has resulted in hefty federal budget deficits, which in turn have somewhat eroded the value of the dollar (the EU's internal fuckups notwithstanding).

It's a good idea long term, but not right now.

The deficits were not caused by the tax cuts
(and letting people keep more of their own money
during a recession has been the proper choice forever)
spending more than you collect is the cause of 'deficits'.

Sheesh I hope the wife sets your family budget...

You are correct. So, when your expenses go up to finance a war, that's the time to cut your intake?

My 4 YO knows better.

Hello... Hello...
Homey should thank you for reinforcing his point. :lloyd:

Temporarily lowering your intake with the long-term objective of increasing the tax base, thus increasing the intake, is a proven method to increase income. It works every time it's tried.

There is a point of diminishing returns. We just have a long way to go before getting there. During the short term wait, wouldn't it be prudent to cut inessential expenditures? Do we really need to fund art or lazy bastards when we're at war?

Absolutely salient points, but let's face facts. Without a super-majority in Congress, you aren't going to get those spending cuts in any kind of hurry. You simply won't. However, you don't have to cut your own throat in the short term. You can wait to address the long term benefits of tax cuts for a few years, until this war is paid for.

Good idea, wrong timing.

Why aren't there more cries of foul? The Dems are using more dirty tricks than the Republicans know. In a few years, should we return to the former way of Congress, it'll be fun to listen to the screechin', bellowin' & hollerin' of unjust tactics by the right for doing exactly what they've been taught by a minority.

Remember these words....MINORITY RIGHTS (and I don't mean skin color)

Don't preach to the choir, OK?

I'm simply acknowledging the realities of short term necessities in wartime - which I believe I've seen you do a time or two as well.

Um how's this for some 'four-year-old' math?

How much is the deficit?
What is the yearly cost of duh war.
Now ya can't add in the normal defense
expenditures and you can't say:
"Since 09-11 we've spent thus and so".

Nah one of the two things I intensely dislike about the Bush administration
is their overspending, the other is the pandering to the illegals.
I shudder to think what the last four years would have been like with Algore instead!

I think all military pay should be tax free. :D I'd rather have the whole enchilada than the dime-and nickle pay raises I've been getting, which, incidentally, put me in a higher tax bracket. Either that, or an ID card get's you all necessities free...(food, water, clothing)...

Absolutely. They should also pay a competitive salary commensurate with skills and experience. BTW, I work 45 hours per week. If I work 50 I take home less. Wonder if you bitch about it as much as I do? :D

Substantially the same. It really surprises me that anyone thinks differently.
