That's despicable

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The tsunami tragedy in South Asia has had a huge impact on Canadians and recent polls indicate that more than half of the households in country have donated to tsunami relief efforts. But a little less of that charity will be making it overseas thanks to a pair of opportunists in Mississauga that allegedly pinched a donation box at a local Beer Store.

Residents have reacted to the despicable theft with disgust and many people simply can’t believe someone would steal money meant for people in such a dire situation.

“I don't even have words for that to be honest,” area resident Jan Strickland said. “For somebody to do something like that when other people really need it, I am disgusted.”

“To rob a relief fund, that’s real low, there’s nothing that could be any lower than that,” another neighbour named Laval Jackson said.

According to police, two men entered the store to buy a case of beer at the 1151 Dundas St. West location. When the clerk went in the back to grab the box of suds one of them allegedly put the donation box in their jacket. The pair purchased the beer and left.

The money customers put into the box was and is being collected for the Red Cross to help the tsunami survivors, thankfully the loss wasn’t as big as it could have been – employees make sure to empty the bin every morning.

The two culprits were caught on the store’s security camera (top left) and police have released descriptions of both men:

Stealing donation boxes. Low, low, low. :disgust:

I know a guy who got caught stealing tampons because he was to scared to by them. The cops and store security were so caught up they decided to drop the whole matter. The guy honestly was to scared to buy them though. Still, getting caught stealing tampons. How embarassing.

That's just so...dumb.

He couldn't just tell his female compatriot that he just "can't" buy them? or he *cringe* needed them for himself?

It happened when we were kids. His mom gave him some money and sent him to the store to buy them for her. I think we were 11 or 12 year old kids at the time.

oh no he must have been mortified!!! awwwww poor guy. And then to be caught with them and have to explain it all. wow.

Yeah. I laughed my ass off at him for close to a month. I still get a good laugh out of it when I see him.

What really get his goat is when I go over to his place, walk in the bathroom and then yell "Where's the tampons?"

His wife is mortified but his face is like a candy apple Corvette right off the line. A moment to last a lifetime.

I knew a guy that got caught stealing condoms (rubbers) back when I was a teen.
Back then that kind of thing was embarrassing, not anymore though. My, how times have changed.
That was also back when people were ashamed to get/use food stamps and stuff like that. :alienhuh:

Those guys are really smooth not thinking that there wouldn't be some kind of anti-robbery video/camera system watching over the place. From what I've seen of Canadian prisons, it might just be a step up for them in life as most of what I've seen almost look like 3 star resorts instead of criminal punishment.

Number of inmates: 494

Man o man... low numbers, clean, efficient ... friggin luxury.

I saw a few Canadian supermax ducumentaries over the last few years interviewing some of your serial killers and whatnot. From what I saw, the facilities were quiet and confortable ... and regardless of the crime, noone seemed to be able to serve more than 20 years. Once you kill the first time, everything else is sorta like a freebie bonus.

In Canada, life imprisonment is mandatory for murder. The non-parole period is 25 years for 1st degree murder, and for 2nd degree murder, the non-parole period ranges between 10 and 25 years. If a non-parole period is more than 15 years, the prisoner can apply to the National Parole Board for parole consideration after 15 years. Other crimes, including robbery, rape and burglary, have a maximum sentence of life. In these cases, the non-parole period is seven years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_sentence
nothing barring consecutive sentences. People get em all the time.

Any idea of the general success rate of said appeals to ditch out early? Any idea of the minimum age to pull the 'adult' time for the big crimes instead of just being pushed off into the juvi system?

there is one that is almost as low. Some people are pretending to be donation organisations and taking the money that way. but its beyond pathetic that anyone would do such a thing

I have supervised a young man on probation who, in addition to his felony charges I got him on, stole collection jars from country stores and the like for a family whose house burned down. He had no doubt as to my opinion of that particulat escapade...
