Southern Discomfort
A graduate student in New York state unhappy with his grades and
professors has received a $600,000 payoff after he sued a university
for the pain and suffering he endured, according to the Buffalo News.
Carlos Banyon sued the University of Buffalo claiming that faculty
members prevented him from earning a doctorate in anthropology because
he filed discrimination charges against the university.
As examples of the discrimination he suffered, Banyon says professors
refused to give him special treatment on tests and papers even though
he is disabled and walks with a cane. The lawsuit also claimed
professors shut him out of opportunities because he did not have an
"excellent command of English," and that the anthropology department's
qualifying exam was "a tool of racist discrimination and biased
against minority students."
A judge dismissed Banyon's discrimination complaints based on race,
nationality and disability, but allowed his retaliation complaint to
go to trial.
**end**
Get in line, everybody. With this one, the precedent is now set. Handouts for anyone with the lack of self esteem to whine and moan until you get a six figure payout. Or maybe you just need a first name like Carlos. Maybe the Roberts and Freds among us are still as screwed as we were yesterday.
