Whatdya know...

Juneau Alaska 3,108 square miles
Los Angeles covers only 458.2 square miles

It's also the only capital city in the United States accessible only by boat or plane

Fairbanks and Anchorage are also larger than LA and Chicago...:D

With 50,000 people we're the second most populated city in Alaska(Fairbanks).

In terms of land area, California City is second only to Los Angeles in California. Of course, there are 3.5 million people in LA and a couple thousand in California City.

There was supposed to be a massive explosion of housing construction 15 or so years ago in California City, and it never happened.

Only 3.5 millions in LA?

That's a legal city limit measurement. If you take into account all of the 100 sub-cities that make up the greater metro area (like Burbank, San Bernadino, Anaheim) ... it adds up to like 14 mil.

Sitka, Alaska Displaced Juneau, Alaska in 2000
While New York City is the most populous city in the United States, Sitka, Alaska is the largest city in area. Sitka includes a whopping 2874 square miles of incorporated area. The city is larger than the state of Delaware! Officially known as the "City and Borough of Sitka," the city consolidated the City of Sitka Borough in 2000 to be the country's largest city.
Sitka displaced Juneau, Alaska as the largest city upon the 2000 incorporation. Juneau is 2717 square miles and was formed through incorporation of the borough and city in 1970.

Sitka is a perfect example of an "overbounded" city, which refers to a city that has boundaries that extend far beyond its developed area (certainly the glaciers and ice fields in the city won't be developed soon.)

Jacksonville, Florida is the largest city in area in the contiguous 48 states at 758 square miles. Jacksonville includes all of Duval County, Florida with the exception of the beach communities (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach) and Baldwin.

It must be a mexican thing to call the whole metropolitan area just by the name of the main city. I kinda ignored the fact that there are city limits.

OTOH, Tokyo's metropolitan area must be a MONSTER. At 35 millions, when you breath you must take the air out of someone else.
