Answer this and win the grand prize.

Three men come into a hotel one night and they each want a room but there is only one left. So they decide to share it. The inkeeper says that the room will be $12 (even though it's actually $10). Each man is tired from a long days work and in a hurry to get some sleep so they each give him a $5 dollar bill and tell him to pay them the difference the next day. The next morning he goes to their room and gives them back $3 from the $15 keeping the other $2 for himself and giving each of the three men back $1 so instead of paying $5 each they payed $4 each. 4+4+4=12 but the inkeeper only kept $2 and $12+$2 is only $14 So what happened to the other $1?

the other $1 is non existant

the innkeeper screwed himself out of the his own $2, pocketing it before putting it toward the room.

Please expound. How could he have screwed himself? He kept the two dollars just like he had planned.

Fuck that question. You should not add the $2 of the innkeeper, you should subtract it. $12 - $2 = $10, since he is RETURNING the money. :retard7:

LL, i thought you said you don't use profane language? lol That's the thing about the question, it kind of sets you up to do the problem the wrong way. Nonetheless it's a good one. This was one of albert einstein's favorites.

Lol, I RARELY use profane language. But you have no idea how confused I was, going over it in my mind for half an hour in 3 different languages because I was convinced I make a mistake somewhere. Then I brought out the whiteboard and drew physical coins, moved them, and wrote out the logical procession of steps. Only then did I see the obvious logic error.

VERY good question, and VERY frustrating.

He kept the $2, but not in the way he planned. He charged them $12 and gave them back the correct change. The mistake was in his own mind - he knew the room only costed $10 and he planned to charge an extra $2 ... and when he pocketed the money, he screwed himself out of the "extra" $2 for the room mentally. There is no missing $1.

So what did I win?

THE GRAND PRIZE DONTCHA KNOW?!

Well it was going to be this special and rare 22oz beer i have here but you guys took too long so i kinda opened it already. Want me to duct tape the cap on and mail the rest to ya?

You should not add $3 instead of $2, 'cause the "tip" is already paid in the $12

4+4+4 = 12 (including the 2 the other guy kept)
12+3 (what he gave back) = 15
