Funny how people forget what they learned in high school economics, mainly that the economy cycles between good and bad. Things started turning down before the 2000 election, too. Plus, that graph only goes back to 1978, the era of stagflation. Additionally, the "in the black" years correspond to the dot.com bubble and the explosion in the popularity of SUVs, which led to record profits for the Big Three.
