Iraqi civilians are rising up against Saddam Hussein's militia in Baghdad and Basra, the country's two largest cities, according to various news reports.

Sources in Baghdad were reporting citizen uprisings against the Fedayeen Saddam, Kuwait News Agency said Monday.

"Major bloody confrontations are currently taking place between the residents of Baghdad and the regime's militia, killing dozens of Saddam's loyalists and forcing many of their leaders to leave their positions and change into civilian clothes," sources inside the city told KUNA.

And Iranian media reported that 35 Iraqi soldiers had been killed in three areas of the capital where civilians have been rising up against the military.

Gonz, you know that's just propaganda invented by the right wing. Everyone that isn't a blind sheep knows that the Iraqi people were just fine before we showed up and are pissed that we are there.

They've had plenty of practice surviving under Saddams regime - I don't suppose it makes a difference what flag you wave so long as you and your family are still alive.

Right... Iraqi flag, US flag... what's the difference?

You should try getting into the mind set of someone who has had to survive under such an opressive regime. They see someone bigger, badder and uglier (to them) come in and kick the other big, bad and ugly guy out. Of course they're going to cheer and smile, it's a survival tactic - people don't change overnight - perhaps given time it will be genuine, but I somewhat doubt it is right now, after all they've more than likely been told we're worse than Saddam.

Has everyone seen what the Iraqis in Basra are doing with their newfound freedom? Looting and stealing. They're destroying their own backyard. And blaming the allies for not supplying control to the area.

Yeah, I saw that. Not really surprised though, after the last ten years of not having anything of luxury at all, some looting is to be expected. I think once we can get in and establish some kind of police force things will get back to normal. Right now they know that the Iraqi Police are gone, and the US and Brits aren't the cops. The same would happen in any large city in the US, I'm sure.

Okay, I see what you're saying now. It wasn't clear to me whether you thought the threat was real or imagined. I agree that it could be that they are afraid of us. I don't think it is in every case, but it could be with a lot of people. There are two views of the USA out there: the Land of Freedom and Prosperity, and the Land of the CIA and Covert Ops. (I should say those two views aren't just out there, they're in here too.) I suppose it depends on which of those two views the people accept as to why they're cheering.

The little girl looked genuinely happy, though, and I just hope that her happiness is justified. That's really why I posted the picture. I want her to grow up in a country where she can be free to pursue her dreams.

Yeah, it always kind of amazed me why people would tear up their own cities. I'm sure you'll hear about a couple more coming up here when the Final four play. There is usually at least one game that turns into a riot outside.
