Typhoon Nida leaves 23 dead and missing in the Philippines

Tue May 18,10:30 PM ET

MANILA, (AFP) - The number of dead and missing from Typhoon Nida has risen to 23 with more than 28,000 displaced by the storm this week.

At least 13 people were confirmed dead, mostly from drowning while 10 others are still missing with one person injured, the government said.

In the worst single incident, eight people were killed and four were still missing after a small inter-island ferry capsized off the Camotes island in the central Philippines on Tuesday, the civil defense office said.

Initial damage estimates were placed at 72.6 million pesos (1.3 million dollars), with the agricultural sector sustaining the worst damage.

President Gloria Arroyo declared the heavily-hit eastern Bicol region and the islands of Masbate and Samar under a state of calamity, which would give them faster access to emergency funds.

Typhoon Nida, with winds of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour was charted before dawn Wednesday, 330 kilometers northeast of the northern city of Aparri, moving northeast away from the Philippines at 19 kilometers per hour.

Storm alerts have been lowered throughout the country except for the lowest-level alert, still raised over the northernmost islands of Batanes.

Nida lashed the eastern side of the central and northern Philippines from Sunday to Tuesday, causing widespread damage. At least three villages were destroyed by landslides and thousands of people were left stranded after sea travel was suspended in the affected areas.

I hope Toolbox and his family are OK. Is Shadowfax still in the islands?

maybe he's doing a little underwater exploration of the typhoons eye.

Y'see this is what I like about Montreal. Blizzards, bugs, 100C temp changes, the french .... but no natural disasters. No torrential floods. No earthquakes. No tornados. And no bloody hurricanes.

Shadow? Toolbox? C'mon guys.

Chic, any way to get ahold of them?

wasnt' there a flood awhile ago over there somewhere? :confuse3:

ice storm

The only people hurt during the ice storm were the elderly without anyone to help them. We were technologically deprived for a while, but very few people were hurt because of it. Hurricanes and such can and do kill anyone in their way. The flood you're thinking of was up by Chicoutimi. Almost as far from Montreal as Toronto is.

we had a flood, in 1986 I think, or '87

Decarie expressway was filled with water

That was nothing but backed up storm drains and sewers. I was working in the basement at Birks when that happened. '87 sounds right. Minor property damage, and everything high and dry within hours. That's not exactly my definition of a disaster.

If a hurricane just blew through there, I'll wager their phone system has better things to occupy it at the moment.

Nicole and I were stalking aboot today...she saw that Toolbox™ was active on his website a couple hours ago...so I guess we can assume that all is well. :)

Why would anybody want to stalk a boot? Am I missing something here? Should I hide my boots now? :D

You're in the military. Aren't you supposed to keep your boots on at all times?

Not while off-duty. Now I'm worried. Guess I'll have to put my boots in a secure location whenever I take them off... :lol2:

Gahhh. Sorry, it was keep your rubbers on at all times. Brits call gumboots rubbers. My bad. Carry on.
