GCSE 'gender gap' sparks concern

This year's GCSE exam results, which more than 600,000 students are getting on Thursday, show that girls are still outstripping boys in almost every subject. T

The government says it is worried by the "unacceptable" gender gap of nine percentage points at the top grades.

we have a lad culture here that means boys seem comfortable just 'passing', while girls are driving thier educational development far more. it continues into a-levels too and i have expereinced it at university, where some of the male students aren't interested in doing their best, rather enough to get by.

families and peers need to try to break that lad culture, and schools may have to accept that in some subjects boys need to be taught differently, and hence the sexes seperated.

Can't have that. Feminist groups would be screaming for blood, saying that the lasses education was not at the same level... ;)

the girls will benefit too, from less disruption and interuption in the classroom. equalicists might argue that the current situation disadvantages boys by not teaching them in the way that benefits them best.

but that argument negates the fact that much of the problem is cultural and of the boys own making, and demands as much work in the home as the school.

I know this won't apply to everyone, but single sex schools...well...suck.
Education is important but I think that the effects of seperating the two sexes may have a negative effect on the lives of some people, and imho this can be more damaging than not having the optimum in teaching methods.

what i've heard its mixed schools seperating the sexes for certain subjects [maths and english i think they were], it might only be for the lower sets even.

i agree with you fully, scanty, the social skills learned in mixed schools are very important.

That's pretty amazing. In the States, it's the other way around. Boys usually score higher on standardized tests than the girls and the politicitians have been worrying over that gender gap for year.

The culture here seems to favor boys in education more than girls. Girls are less likely to be pushed academically (or at least they have been historically) and are less likely to be given attention by teachers in school. For instance, there was one study done that indicated teachers called on boys to answer questions more than girls (not that I give studies much credence in general, but there it is).

The gap is fairly narrow early on, but widens during the high school years.
