UN question

If the US has to get help in ousting a brutal dictator like saddam & if/when we don't we're imperialist pigs then where the hell is the fucking UN when Kim Jung Il is shitting in our yard?

Hello? Anybody out there? We're a bit pre-occupied at the moment. A little assistance from the world to shut this loud mouth up would be a nice gesture.

The whole purpose of the UN is to create a world regime. Start at the top and work your way down to the small fish. Were next.

i haven't been watching a lot of news recently, but afaik it's a case of "if the reason for going to war is that they have a weapons program, we'd like some proof please"

I haven't heard what the latest stance from the UN is. I'd like to know though.

That's kinda my point. Let us decide to actually take some action after 11 years & the whole world cries "Foul!" but, as soon as some tinpot dictator begins threatening us & it's all quiet on the western front,

That's because most of the world has the thought that 'we deserve it'. Nevermind that the US, for all of it's faults, has been the major stabilizing force on the planet for at least 15 years, and disregard that the ones doing the most complaining are the ones who benefitted most from our involvement in their countries. Want to see the UN and the rest of the world start doing something? Have our troops and our money pull out of every country that had ore than one anti-US protest in the past 20 years. Ignore all the cries for help when natural disasters strike. Look after our own first. When the rest of the world has to start doing things without our help, you'll see a much stronger world, and probably a more cooperative one as well.

I think we should do just that Gato. I'm sick and tired of hearing about all the help and handouts we give to these people and they just shit all over us

True, we do need to stop helping other countries feed their populations when we have people here starving, but at the same time, even though we are looked down upon by some, we are highly revered by others because of our humanitarian efforts.

I agree with Gato. Leave them be. Let them deal with their own problems, and hell, the rest of the worlds problems as well. Then, in a few years, after utter chaos has broken out in many parts of the world, they will beg for us to return to our former role. All the while we can finally start to enjoy that peace dividend that never materialized at the end of the cold war.

I think the sad thing is, eventually we'd have to fix the situation, and by then it would cost more than just to keep order from the beginning. People will never be happy!

I was talking with my wife about this yesterday. People from her country dislike Americans but like Russians. Ironically, the Russians actually occupied their cities, however the US has never actually done anything to them. Strange huh. This doesn't make any sense. She was telling me how they were taking down all the signs on the roads (or changing them) and stuff like that so they would think they are going to some city, only the signs would no longer lead them to there (I mean the soviet troops). Now you would expect more anger toward someone who occupied your cities than to someone who never did. But they like the Russians, and tend to dislike us quite a lot.

Where is the rationality here? My guess is historical and cultural connections mean more than anything else when it comes to whether you like someone or dislike them (at least as a nation or as a people). It seems to be the case more times than not. And whether you 'approve' of someones actions or not has more to do with whether you like them or not than the merit of their actions more times than not as well.

And who would that be, Altron? The US? Laughable. Just because you have the biggest stick, it doesn't mean you own the ballpark. ;)

I only see one problem with this. In 1938, we had a isolationist movement on this country. It cost us 400,000 soldiers. One well placed bullet or movement sooner may have stopped that.

Only because of Japan. We were already working on the A-bomb in the late 1930's. ;)
