UN will stay in Iraq despite yeaterday's attack

The blast is the most devastating attack on a UN civilian complex
The United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has said the UN will continue its work in Iraq there, despite Tuesday's devastating attack on its headquarters in Baghdad.
He said the UN would not be distracted by what he called a senseless and brutal act - but expressed disappointment that the US-led military forces had failed to create a secure environment for the UN's work.

The search for survivors in the rubble of the bombed building has been scaled down.

At least 17 people were killed, including the UN special representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. More than 100 people were injured in the blast.

Terrorists don't tend to be to intelligent. Attacks like this will only make the UN angry and strengthen it's resolve(what little it has). If they were smart they'd be focusing on the US.

Agree, thought let's not forget UN was responsible for the economic sanctions that led millions to sub-human conditions...

Strengthen their resolve? Who are you kidding? They're bugging out as fast as the planes are leaving. Kofi, in his mighty statuesque form & manner said something to the affect that "When we find those responsible, we'll point our fingers at them & say "Bad Men, You're very very bad men". :rofl3:

As far as not being intelligent, the suicide murderers aren't but the leaders had enough sense to get saddams guards hired as the UN security force

You could say that the US was actually responsible for that action.

I standby what i said Gonz. These attacks won't even get the UN out but will ultimately lead to US troops protecting the UN in the future.
I did mention as well
(what little it has)
.
Please don't take this as me defending the UN in any way. They are wimps but there's no way in hell they're going to let us take credit for anything positive that may come of Iraq and secondly they maintain a foot in the door simply by keeping the smallest of forces in Iraq. Even the UN can spare a couple hundred people a year for this strategic foothold.

Not that I would ever sympathise with this kinda terrorist action.

But I think that was one of the points of this bombing......exclude the UN and your left with the US and the Brits as the major focus for hatred

Agreed. Basically the US and anyone who helps them. Yet they're blinded by the fact that harming the UN probably does them more harm then good.

I didn't. It made a good jumping off point.

The UN, (more specifically a few nations in the UN) are now stumbling all over themselves to join the multinational force in place in Iraq. God forbid the Americans (with their already well appreciated supporters) actually follow through on improving Iraq without their help, thus proving the ineffectiveness of the UN. They need to have thier foot in the door so they can pick up those contracts that have been in place (illegally) for the last 13 years.

The contracts were illegal because of UN sanctions against Iraq. The Germans & French profited quite nicely.

This whole paragraph makes no sense. For one thing ShrubCo is trying to use the recent bombing to get UN support and more countries involved.
The Bush administration, under pressure to improve security in Iraq following the devastating bombing of the United Nations' Baghdad headquarters, revived a discarded effort yesterday to win U.N. Security Council support for a broader international role in policing the country.

The effort, initiated by the State Department, is designed to harness outrage at the bombing to draw more countries into securing and rebuilding Iraq, without surrendering significant American authority, U.S. sources said. The Pentagon, which opposes diluting U.S. command, has offered its tentative approval, according to administration officials.
