Three White House cultural advisers have resigned in protest at the failure of US forces to prevent the looting of Iraq's national museum - home to artefacts dating back 10,000 years.

It was poor forthought(or none) on our part. I'm hearing stories now that it might have actually been Iraqi officials/professionals looting the majority of the site. This could be a bogus story though. Yup, no telling just how much was lost here. Hundreds of thousands of items.

some reports had items destroyed in the museums - i can understand stealing it to sell on but destruction is mindless and sad.

reminds me of just how bad off people can be. Knowing full well the cultural value they woulod still stealit or destroy. IMHO it wouldnot have mattered if it was the US or any other country that went in and handed them their freedom, they still would have been doing the same thing. Its called human nature.
