Well, it's time

My wife has had a wish to join the military since who knows when. Her first husband wouldn't allow it. Now, since her 35th birthday is this month, her time is running real short. Lucky for her, the waiver for the kids went through. She leaves Monday night for Portland, stays in a hotel up there and fly's to Ft. Leonardwood, MS (Ft. Misery) for Basic Training. From there, she goes to Ft. Lee, Virginia for her AIT. I always support her in her decisions and actually encouraged her in this one, being a Veteran myself.

Anyway, I thought I'd explain why I'm not here much as of late. Been kinda busy spending time with my wife (and no, you don't need to know what we've been doing either). Taking her out for a lobster/steak dinner tomorrow night since after that it'll be chilli-mac for the next five months.  (Been there, done that!)

She's gonna be a REMF (support puke actually) and will be stationed with the local National Guard Unit when she finishes her training.

No you don't. I've been there and done that. Right now is not the time to enlist. Trust me.

Almost 35 and she's going to basic? Oh man, you got some rubbin to do when she gets home.

Tell her sh'e about to venture into the beginning of one of the hardest thigs she'll ever do & it can be fulfilling beyond reason (providing we don't go back to Vietnam)...best of luck & don't call the DI "Sir".

She's in pretty good shape now, so it'll be a little bit easier for her than if she hadn't. It'll be tough though regardless. No piece of cake, but she's a pretty tough gal. I've been giving her some pointers about what the expect in terms of the Drill Sergeant and so forth. Not to volunteer, but if told to do something, then do the best you can. Don't make yourself known, let the young ones make the scene. Keep your mouth shut and don't talk about anyone in your company, good or bad, behind their back. Keep your mind on the job. People say anything bad about you, just let it run off like water. Only going to be around these people for eight weeks then more than likely never see them again. Don't make friends with anyone until you've been in at least three to four weeks. This gives her time to judge people.

Showing her how to do a few things like saluting and a few D&C things. Explaining rank and the way to address them. Not much else I can really show her though. Told her that she has to remember that the Drill Sergeant is not her enemy. He's there to train you to be a soldier. Turn you from a civilian into a soldier. He's not the bad guy. Listen to what they tell you, etc, etc...

She's a bit nervous and sad that she won't see the kids for the time being, but she knows that she'll be back. Meanwhile, I get to manage the family affairs and the kids for the time being.

With her collage, she's going in as an E-3 (four credits short of an E-4). When I went in I made $500 a month, which went mainly to the purchase of frosty beverages. She's going to be taking in close to $2000 to start....friggin pathetic.

LOL...I got about $150/month when I went in. I'm glad they raised it to almost a wage anyway...

Beats the hell outta me. If I had stayed in, I'd be making somewhere around $4000 or so a month....sheesh

Yes I do. I have a really, really, really strong urge to enlist. Always had. My parents told me to enlist after graduation. (My dad and his two brothers were both in the military.) I in my infinite wisdom ignored that and went to college. I've changed majors... three times. I wouldn't call it time wasted, and I loved it here, but I think it would have been better to enlist and after seeing a bit more of life then made a decision what I want to study.

I've been there and done that.
Well I haven't.

Right now is not the time to enlist. Trust me.
Perhaps. If I was graduating this fall though, I would enlist. But since I am not, and since I'm already in college, I will finish what I started and then think about it in five years.

Tell your wife good luck. I really admire her for doing that. At age 35. :)

United States Army. :D

Wow, She's going for the gusto isn't she?

A friend of mine loads bombs on jets on an aircraft carrier.
That seems like one of the safer jobs.:D

I sould have said "he used to load bombs",
he's in the reserves now, almost 40, and getting ready to
retire with a nice pension, then they just called him up
about a month ago. I don't know exactly what he's doing now.
If it's the same job, or something else.
He's been my best friend most of my life.
I need to check with his family, and see what's going on.
I haven't talked with him in a while now.:(
