Mad Cover Artist Who Helped Create Alfred E. Newman Dies

The artist who helped create Mad magazine mascot and sometimes presidential candidate Alfred E. Newman has died.

Kelly Freas was 82.

I still use the "what me worry " line on occasion and everybody knows what I mean. He will always be remembered for bringing a smile.

Mad magazine should be, and likely was, required reading for pre-teens. I actually learned a lot from reading it. My school was too busy teaching us other stuff to dwell very long on things like the political process and such; Mad, through satire and farce, introduced me to that and other concepts long before any kid tested mother approved board of education sanctioned civics course got around to it.
