Why do some people refer to it as "outer" space?
As if there was some kind of inner space to it? (Maybe what the Star Trek universe refers to as subspace?)

And why don't we call ourselves "animals"?

Men are already commonly referred to as animals by women.
It just depends on the situation.
In delight: "Oh, you ANIMAL!"
In disgust: "Oh, you ANIMAL!"

I think they call it "outer space" because it is the space outside of our own atmosphere.

Because "InnerSpace" is the name of a movie?
Actually, I'd have to agree with Anakin on this one.
Eww, now I feel all dirty. D
umm... cause, it's outside or something
