A bomb blast at a basketball game in the southern Philippines has killed 10 and injured 40.
The bomb exploded inside a crowded gym in the town of Parang on Mindanao island, which has been troubled by a decades-old Muslim rebellion.
Police said it may have been an attempt to assassinate the Christian town mayor, Vivencio Bataga.
Mr Bataga - who was injured in the blast - survived at least three attempts on his life last year.

This is for all the marbles, folks. Personally, I feel that, no matter what your reasons are, you have no right to kill innocents. Some may say that those who died were guilty, but guilty of what?
BANGKOK, Thailand — Assailants set fire to 18 schools and stormed a military camp in southern Thailand (search), killing four soldiers Sunday, an official said.
The attacks -- the most daring in months -- occurred in the early morning at about 1 a.m. in various places in the Muslim-dominated province of Narathiwat (search) bordering Malaysia, military spokesman Lt. Gen. Phalangun Krahan said.
No one was hurt in the school fires, some of which still burned eight hours later.
But attackers shot and killed four guards at a military armory in Narathiwat, Phalangun said. The Army Radio said two were shot in the head, the third had his throat slashed and the fourth was beaten.
The assailants fled with 103 assault rifles from the military camp, Phalangun said.
Army spokesman Col. Somkhuan Saengpatranet said about 30 bandits participated in the attacks, but officials have not been able to identify to which group they belong.
The army has ordered a manhunt and requested neighboring Malaysia (search) to seal the border to prevent the group from fleeing the country, the army said.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra also called an emergency meeting of top security officials in Bangkok on Sunday.

It's kind of hard to endear others to your cause when you permit those in your group to kill anyone who doesn't follow your primary way of thinking. Aren't religions supposed to try and convert you before you're killed? I'm sure that the conversion is not supposed to take place at gunpoint, either.
(CNN) -- The Arabic-language TV network Al-Jazeera aired an audiotape Sunday in which a man purporting to be Osama bin Laden referred to recent events, including a November bombing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The speaker also mentioned the launching of an unofficial peace plan by Israelis and Palestinians in Geneva in early December.
CNN could not confirm that the speaker was the al Qaeda leader.
U.S. officials are analyzing the recording. A CIA spokesman said "it usually takes a couple of days" to determine "who we think it is" and when the tape was made.
The last tape that U.S. officials said contained bin Laden's voice was aired October 18. The officials said it was recorded at some point three months before.
Al-Jazeera said in the latest tape the speaker claiming to be bin Laden referred to the capture of Saddam Hussein.
In the approximately 15 minutes the network played on the air Sunday, however, the speaker did not mention the capture.
The tape began differently from previous tapes attributed to bin Laden. It began with the speaker stating he is Osama bin Laden.
He then named recent events, including the November 8 suicide bombing of a residential compound near Riyadh's diplomatic quarter that killed 17 people, most of them Arabs. Al Qaeda later claimed responsibility for the bombing.
The speaker called on his "Muslim brethren" to fight a "jihad" against the "crusaders," citing the occupation of Iraq, the U.S.-backed road map for Middle East peace and the Geneva initiative, which was launched December 1.
"If you don't take them on in Jerusalem, they'll take your sacred land," the voice said.
The voice on the tape said Muslims should form a special council to run the Middle East and overthrow regimes in the region that work with the United States. Persian Gulf leaders are not capable of defending the Islamic nation, the speaker said.
There was no specific call for attacks against the United States at home, as there was in previous tapes.
Sorry Gonz...
Surly you can't believe that they think their own moderate majority is going to blindly follow this...
