Pilots must stay on unless there's no gas supply, in which case it would go out, obviously. Otherwise you could have gas going through without being ignited....
And yes, obviously my other gas stinks too. If it didn't, I'd have a much better social life, for starters. My bathroom wouldn't scare my cat so much, either.
