Confidential memo reveals US plan to provoke an invasion of Iraq

A confidential record of a meeting between President Bush and Tony Blair before the invasion of Iraq, outlining their intention to go to war without a second United Nations resolution, will be an explosive issue for the official inquiry into the UK's role in toppling Saddam Hussein.

The memo, written on 31 January 2003, almost two months before the invasion and seen by the Observer, confirms that as the two men became increasingly aware UN inspectors would fail to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) they had to contemplate alternative scenarios that might trigger a second resolution legitimising military action.

Bush told Blair the US had drawn up a provocative plan "to fly U2 reconnaissance aircraft painted in UN colours over Iraq with fighter cover". Bush said that if Saddam fired at the planes this would put the Iraqi leader in breach of UN resolutions.

The president expressed hopes that an Iraqi defector would be "brought out" to give a public presentation on Saddam's WMD or that someone might assassinate the Iraqi leader. However, Bush confirmed even without a second resolution, the US was prepared for military action. The memo said Blair told Bush he was "solidly with the president".

Right you are, but it does confirm previous reports of back room scheming and devious methods used to create additional propaganda intended to justify the planned invasion once no WMDs were discovered.

Remember, Republicans and conservative talk show hosts are still clinging to the belief there were WMDs and this adds one more link to the deception of American citizens and British subjects.

Personally, I think the world needs to know the theories of no WMDs and subsequent coverups and altered reasons to continue with the invasion need to be opened as proof those theories were politically motivated, idle gossip or rumors. It should, if nothing else, help restore some semblance of integrity to the U.S.

You'd think. Still seems that there are plenty of people that think it was all on the up and up somehow though.

Right, after being mislead by the Bush administration. Shenanigans like this show the lengths he was going to in order to deceive.

This "he fooled congress, so that makes it ok" line of reasoning of yours has never worked.

It really is just a copout to not address the actions in the OP. Are you expressing your approval for these actions or not?

This is old news. A reiteration of a reiteration.

The Bush haters, now known as Obamanites, just keep shoveling it back to the top every time their boy gets in trouble.

The Congressional committees found reason for war. Twice.

The Congress, as a whole, found reason for war, twice.

The Security Council of the UN found reason for war, twice.

Damn the GW was smart.

If GW was such an asshole, then throw him out of office!

Oh, wait...

What I think is odd is that some of you keep saying that he's gone, as if it makes all the wrong he did OK because he isn't president anymore. He's gone its true, but the harm he did to this country is not gone. I think he could easily have left the white house in chains and quite justifiably. I am quite sure had he been a dem and did all he did he would have at least been impeached and removed. It's just that Pelosi and her little crowd, number one are complete pussies, and number two afraid to make waves because of the people they are in bed with politically. The Democratic party doesn't have that "blood in the water" instinct that most Republicans have an abundance of. Truth be told they are all a bunch of fucktards, but I guess it comes down to with which fucktard's stated, (posssibly not real) position you favor.....

Nope, it's from two days ago. The Bushites, now known as Obama haters just never want to address the type of thing that shows how they were manipulated into supporting the gigantic farce..

I think we've covered Bush's misleading of Congress with the non existent WMDs and trying to represent them as a threat.

The Security Council of the UN found reason for war, twice.

The UN called for further inspections.

Now Gonz, mind addressing the question?

"It really is just a copout to not address the actions in the OP. Are you expressing your approval for these actions or not?"

This just in! Read all about it! Herbert Hoover was a shitty president too. And Billy got a BJ. And Nixon taped some conversations.

The Bush Administration is over. Let it be over.

When new information comes to light about possible criminal activities I think it should be looked at.
