"good to see you" to just-mets

well i was thinking it was a southern thing until spending some time in minnesota recently.

people using the phrase "good to see you" with those they just met maybe a hour previous.

i'd use "nice to've met you" or something like that. "good to see you" would be directed toward someone you were previously familiar with.

what gives? where else is the phrase used in such a way?

I don't think it's a southern thing. Perhaps it's just something some folks say when they are uncertain of what to say.

the first place i heard was from a very friendly older guy in lawrenceville (sp?) GA, not too far from you i s'pose (though certainly an eternity in rush hour), other side o' town...

Maybe you could liken it to when someone tells you to "have a nice trip" and you say "you too" even though they aren't going anywhere :shrug:

Sometimes I say "Thank you" when I should be the one receiving the thanks :shrug:
