How many states are there in the US?

I know how many there are in the US there are 50 but I've been asking ppl around me and I was suprised how many thought there were 52!!! Do me a favor will ya ask ppl around you and see what they say cause either I associate with complete morons or we need to petition the school boards to drill it in their heads!
