What kind of broker are you looking for? Do you want to daytrade or invest? And how much are you planning on opening the account with. Some firms require $2000, $5,000 or $10,000 just to open the account. If you want to daytrade what stock do you want to trade, bluechips, pennies? There is a difference, some brokers charge $.01 per share whether buying or selling for trading stocks under $4 and the like. That doesn't pay if trading pennies at the $.005 range. So the type of firm you want definitely depends on the type of trading/investing you want to do. I have a couple of differents accounts specifically for these reasons. I don't use E-trade or Ameritrade, there are better available sites.

Well, I was going to start an account with Charles Schwabb, But they require $10K minimum.... Not really looking for any particular type of trading, Just getting in. Maybe buy some AMD while its down.... No day trading or penny stocks, I dont have that kind of time. Just want to try to build some cash, maybe get to $10k from $2K....

I have an E-trade account, there are no hidden fees that I'm aware of, however, I wouldn't recoment it to ya. I think Ameritrade or Scott trade have lower fees. Now I can't remember, I haven't traded in a while, but if my memory is correct, and it might not be, you get about 5000 shares for whatever they fee is they say for E-trade, I think it was around $10. Oh, an NYSE trade costs more than a Nasdaq trade with E-trade, but I think it was only $5 more. Most of them SHOULD be similar, up to 5000 shares for $x. I could be wrong on the 5000 though, maybe it was only 1000 I can't remember
