woog awoog awoog.

Math Net was my favourite, but I could use a little help with gas mileage compulations and comparisons.

Current Vehicle gets/got 18mpg last time I calculated (new plugs/cap and fluids) so it probably gets less now.
because gas is $1.13/litre currently, bound to be close to $1.50/litre by the end of summer due to the usual increases and the new "carbon tax" being instituted by the BC Government in their last budget,I'm looking at a car that Mazda says gets 6.1litres/100km 46.3mpg.Mazda Forums I've visited says it gets realworld results of 8-9litres/100kms.

Now for the math.

What is the savings in gas $$$ between the two?I'm hoping the savings will almost if not entirely make the mnthly payment, but my brain must be fried because even though I seem to be putting $40-$50 into the tank every other day ,my math is coming out that I'm only using $270 in gas a mnth.

Should add that I drive over 80km(50miles) per day(total to and from work )and usually another 80 or so on my days off.

TIA :banghead:

So, you drive 80km every single day of the year? 352 days? Assuming that you do...you now burn about 10.5L per day (80km at 7.65 km per litre) and you'd be burning 7.2L per day in the new car (80km at 11.11 km per litre, based on 9L per 100km).

Therefore, in 28 days you currently burn 294L and in the new car you'd burn 202L. So, you'll save a total of 92L per month. That number will of course decrease if you drive less in any given period of time. So, even assuming gas goes to $1.50/L (there are rumours the price is to drop later in the spring...I don't believe them but they're there)...you'd save $138 a month.

I know gas is expensive but when it's all worked out, the amount that you save from one car to the next isn't mindblowing. I currently burn about $150 month in gas in my little car, if I were to get a small truck it would only go up by 50%-ish based on "real" reported gas mileages (not including the manufacturers claims obviously). So, for and extra $75 dollars a month in gas I could go from a small car to a truck...which is WAY less than I expected. I mean, I don't drive as much as you...but still.

by a quick est in my head.
the gas usage for the mazda looks like about 1/3.
270/3=80
270-80=190

savings = ~$190

that's 66%

I'd say go for it.

Thanks, thats pretty much the numbers I kept getting and was surprised at the lack of actual real savings. Its moot anyway ,the Dealership couldn't get the payments to where I wanted and the 0% for 60mnths offer is up Friday. At least thats what they said in their last phone call ,we'll see how badly they need to sell a vehicle if they call back with the #s I asked for. This would be the 4th new vehicle I've financed over the years so I'm not unfamiliar with Dealership tactics.

From when I bought my tires

Sept.27,2007 126191Km
Feb.11,2008 136278Km

Difference of 10087Km over 137days

Currently Feb.27, 1218Km / 16 days =76.125 km/day

so it looks like I was over estimating my mileage ,but not by much.

Actually, the gas usage for the Mazda is 2/3 (18MPG versus 26MPG) the SAVINGS is 1/3. 1/3 of $270 is actually $90. That is at the current cost of gas, and very rough.

I was looking at that.

I was off 10 on my division though...90 is correct, from 270 then 180.

of coarse if it does get the lower...

It won't get what the manufacturer claims. No way, no how. You have to go by what after market tests and current owners report.

493km / 35.416litres = 13.920262028461712220465326406144
100/13.92=7.1839080459770114942528735632184

so it looks like I'm getting approx 7.18litres/100km(approx.40mpg) for my first tank of gas

Assuming my math is right:confuse3:

Forgot to subtract to 36km that were already on the odometer ,so its more like 7.75litres/100km(37.66mpg) ,still quite happy considering the car isn't broke in yet.

I get somewheres around 7-7.5 when I'm doing hardcore highway (like when I drove from Calgary to Rossland a few weeks ago). Normally I do city driving though...it's tough on my car...she's much happier now that she's had a good run, I'll have to make sure to take her out every few months and let her go at 100-110 for a good couple hours.
