I can't think of a single reason to put up with this kind of behavior. The school is being ridiculous as well. Just give them notice that the cutting begins at a certain time, and, when the time elapses, start cutting. If a few unpopulated trees fall, and they still don't get the message, cut down their trees. AFAIK, they are trespassing...
 
Although some just spend a few hours in a tree to show solidarity, others seem to hang out for days or weeks, helped by supporters who hoist food, water and reading materials to them in buckets and haul out trash, excrement and other waste.
