Roxy Music -- Love is the Drug
Bryan Ferry (solo) -- his version of Hurricane
Elvis Costello -- a tie -- Oliver's Army and Lipstick Vogue

Joni Mitchell -- Free Man in Paris
Blind Faith -- Can't Find My Way Home
Traffic -- Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Patti Smith -- Dancing Barefoot

and some jazz (but this is painfully abbreviated, couldn't begin to pick my fave Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman, Duke Ellington, etc etc etc)
Stan Getz -- Aguas De Marco (Waters of March)
Dave Brubeck -- Blue Rondo A La Turk
Bill Evans -- Little Lulu
Miles Davis -- Birth of the Cool (entire damn CD)

don't sweat it tonks -- I don't know half the bands that other people have posted, and don't know three quarters of the stuff people list in the "what are you listening to now" thread

But SHIT!! I forgot to mention these guys -- and they're HUGE favorites...stuck on a desert island stuff...

Richard Thompson (without Linda) -- Read about Love
New York Dolls -- Personality Crisis

Sittin' on a riverboat
Havin' a party
Me and my Cajun Queen
She's turnin' twenty-one on the Mississippi river
Headin' down to New Orleans
The year is 1894
Oh come on mama
And love me some more
Her dark eyes flash
Like a gambler's rings
She shakes her pretty head and sings

Life for me is a riverboat fantasy
Watchin'the sun go down
A rock and roll band
With a reefer in my hand
Now look at that wheel go around
Cocaine kisses and moonshine Misses
That's the life for me
I'm sailing away from my heartache
On a riverboat fantasy

Can't think, can't drink
Anymore whisky
I could'a drunk a river dry
Mmmmm...this old boat she's
Just sittin' in the moonlight
Catchin' the gleam in her eye
Showers of rain come pourin' down
The sky full of stars
Like a french lace gown
Shimmer, glimmer
I think I'm gonna fall
Whoops catch me mama, that's all!

I'm certainly not going to give her top40 crap songs....these are the ones that went over the heads of most...

The difference between punks & headbangers was....
we had long hair, you had none....
we wore handcuffs for fashion, you wore them on your way to jail...
black leather...well, everybody looks good in black leather...
We had enough sense to not stage dive (ever see Heston part the Red Sea)

some truth in that... however punk quickly became a fashion like any other, and I let my hair grow long at that point :p

I think the biggest difference that I remember from the time is that the punks I associated with were much more interested in politics than the headbangers I knew. My personal experience was that the punks would be reading books and making art, the headbangers were getting stoned. I was friends with both, but found the headbangers were more interested in getting drunk than in going to a political rally. In retrospect, the rallies were pointless I suppose, except for a "feel good" attitude that left shortly thereafter.
