I have a friend taking graduate classes and one of the classes he's taking is in ethics and race. Part of the class explores the natural tendency to classify individuals into the perceived minority population regardless of the ratio of minority to majority mix. Obama would be considered black whether his father was black or both parents were white and his great-great grandfather was black. The focus of the class is from a North American perspective (Canada, USA, Mexico).

Needless to say, it was a very interesting conversation with my friend because I've read a lot about other cultures and this seems to be quite universal. :)

yeah, it's kinda weird that I'm accepted in some groups that are skittish
about 'white', simply because my great great granddad was American Indian.

The 'Bloods' and 'Crips' I know do, but the 'Panthers' don't.
Then of coarse there's some of the local groups that see past ethnics all together.
