Sometimes my desktop will flicker and then reset itself after which some icons in the notifcation area of my taskbar will be gone, and sometimes icons will get messed up in windows explorer. It happens, I think, usually when I open windows explorer...any ideas? Thanks

Ok, get TweakUI. In that little gem is a rebuild Icons button, that may help.
