Shark Bites Man At Boca Grande Beach

He was swimming 50 meters off the Gasperilla Island State Park Beach when something latched onto his leg. By the time 19 year old Austrian tourist Armin Trojer looked down, the gulf was red with his blood and he was the 3rd victim of a shark attack this week in Florida.

"He was out real far," Eyewitness Aaron Denson said.

WINK News obtained video shot by a vacationer while rescue crews wrapped Trojers right ankle and prepared him to be airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

"We're just not going out that far," Denson said about his approach to swimming at the beach for the rest of the weekend. "We don't feel like getting bit."

While the experience changed the plans of many tourists on shore. Doctors spent the evening operating on Trojer, repairing several tendons and vessels.

"A shark bite in the pass," Eyewitness Daniel Nethery said almost in disbelief.

Nobody was able catch the shark but doctors say that several lacerations left on the victims leg are consistent with a shark bite.

Local fisherman tell WINK News that there are plenty of sharks in the water off Boca Grande, they say they feed on large schools of tarpon that swim several hundred meters off the water.

"It's Florida," Nethery said. "Just be safe when you're in it (the water)."

Deputies warned vacationers of the incident but will not close the beach for the holiday weekend.

Experts say the chances of being bitten by a shark are one in a million. Meaning a car accident is more likely on the roads this weekend than another attack.
